Hi all — I’m getting ready for the first full release of my heroic fantasy hack. I have a couple of questions for the group. I’ll ask them in two different posts.

1. The name had tentatively been called Blades in the Brokenlands. It doesn’t fit anymore. I need a new name…Let’s crowdsource it!

The setting will originally have one defined continent with city states and maybe one other “nation.” Other nations will be included, but their homelands are not on the continent. The continent does have a large magical “scarred land” with an ancient (and fading) mystical barrier. The long-gone ancient civilization is VERY loosely inspired by King Solomon and the current city states are very loosely based on early Mesopotamian civilizations (sumer / babylonian).

Here’s a question, I hope I can make it clear so bear with me:

Here’s a question, I hope I can make it clear so bear with me:

Session 1: Four players show up. We do a bit of free play then a heist. We decide to do Downtime next section as we have run out of time.

Session 2: Three players show up. We do the downtime then go to free play, then manage to do a heist and downtime.

Session 3: The player who missed last session shows up. We do a heist and go to downtime. How should I proceed with the player? Is he entitled to ALL the actions from the two Downtime periods he missed (Session 2) plus the one from this session?

How would you handle this?

Does anyone use miniatures on the score map to show where everyone is?

Does anyone use miniatures on the score map to show where everyone is? If so, do they recommend somewhere to get blades aligned minis? I currently use poker chips and dice but my players are asking.

What handouts, player aides, GM sheets, maps or otherwise do you use in your Blades games to make them easier, or more enjoyable. Particular focus on new games/new players.

Also any feedback on the ‘Heist Deck’ by Andrew Shields would also be appreciated.

I think this is the best job I’ve ever done as a Blades GM.

I think this is the best job I’ve ever done as a Blades GM. I’ve had decent rules mastery down for a while but I’ve been relying on the cheat sheets and the books for rules references. I didn’t have either available last night so I winged it… and it went really well! I also feel like I did a good job of matching the cycle of play with my narrative style this time around.

Very excited to see where season 2 goes!

Season 2, Episode 1!

Score #10: A New Gamble

G+ may be in its death throes but we’re back at it with another season of Ring Down Below!

We kick things off with a new crew member, the duplicitous Eazel “Umbra” Veleris, a couple new NPCs, a whole new starting situation, and of course a few old problems rearing their pernicious heads. Step into the Isles Paradise Gambling Hall and see what’s afoot in the night-black city of Doskvol…

Book recommendation: The Gutter Prayer, by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan. It follows three thieves in an industrial fantasy city filled with weird stuff — living candles, ghoul tunnels, sentient worm colonies, all kinds of juicy things. Just came out and I am enjoying it immensely.

BAND OF BLADES

Will be running my first session of Band of Blades this week and have some questions I hope this community can help with.

With 5 people playing (including GM), will all 4 players select a Specialist to play per mission? I read that a typical mission is 2 specialists and 1 squad. All players make 1 specialist to begin, but will 2 players need to select a Rookie for missions?

Thank you in advance for any responses/guidance.

Hey, here’s a free look at the first chapter of the third Doskvol novel! I just started it.

The first novel is out there for sale (except trying to fix a glitch so the ebook will work.) The second novel is going through editing and will be out in a couple short months. And I’m started on the third.

This first chapter takes a quick look into the heroic life of a young Inspector determined to bring a brutal crew of scoundrels to justice. How do you like his odds?

The wide-spread misconception that the Bluecoats work for the Inspectors is understandable. They are housed together, they both stop criminals, and they are both funded by the city. The most prominent trait they share is that they will brook no disrespect. If they cannot punish the insolent with the law, they will handle matters otherwise and hide behind the law.

Still, their difference is foundational and pervasive. In the end, the Bluecoats are charged with keeping the peace and protecting the wealthy. The Inspectors are charged with solving crimes and punishing law-breakers. Only a fool would confuse the two mandates.
