I want a simple mechanic to represent the threat of a surveillance state. Like a personal version of Heat. But, I’d rather replace a mechanic instead of adding more.

What if…

Stress was replaced by exposure. As you do things out of the ordinary, you gain exposure instead of stress. Instead of trauma, you blow your cover.

Does it make sense fictionally?

Other thoughts?

Hi all-

Hi all-

Hi all-

I just wanted to let you all know that I have a new Forged in the Dark hack that is an add on / tier reward for the Dog Days comic Kickstart campaign (only 4 days left!). Dog Days is a noir crime / cult mystery in an alternate reality. Its about anthropomorphic animals embroiled in very human stories, with an epic twist (that I won’t spoil).

-Dog Days the Roleplaying Game-

Create your own stories in the world of Dog Days. Play a pack of adventurous characters as they uncover dark secrets in an alternate reality. Pound the pavement as a bull and drop the arm on the crook that left the floater in the river. Stalk the shadows as a vigilante out to settle a score. Or play a stir-wise villain with a sinister plan to get the hook on that flossy politician. Whatever you choose to do, it is time to show the city who is top dog. Dog Days the RPG uses the Forged in the Dark system.

Hi all – I’ll be releasing the first full draft (beta) of my heroic fantasy hack soon.

Hi all – I’ll be releasing the first full draft (beta) of my heroic fantasy hack soon. I’d like to be able to include interesting magical artifacts. If you are bored, suggest a few! Also let me know how you want me to credit you in the book.

I’ll assume that all weapons are “fine” quality.

To get you started:

Beads of Terror: These bone beads can be woven into an individual’s hair or beard. When activated, they emit a fearsome swirling smoke with fleeting images of sinister creatures. You have potency on actions to intimidate. Once per session you can use Bash or Command to cause an opponent to either flee or freeze in terror.

Glaive of the Reaver: The haft of this glaive is intricately carved. Once per session, the bearer can leap from ranged distance to melee distance and attack a gang of opponents on equal footing.

Hi all — I’m getting ready for the first full release of my heroic fantasy hack.

Hi all — I’m getting ready for the first full release of my heroic fantasy hack. I have a couple of questions for the group. I’ll ask them in two different posts.

1. The name had tentatively been called Blades in the Brokenlands. It doesn’t fit anymore. I need a new name…Let’s crowdsource it!

The setting will originally have one defined continent with city states and maybe one other “nation.” Other nations will be included, but their homelands are not on the continent. The continent does have a large magical “scarred land” with an ancient (and fading) mystical barrier. The long-gone ancient civilization is VERY loosely inspired by King Solomon and the current city states are very loosely based on early Mesopotamian civilizations (sumer / babylonian).

Although it isn’t for Blades, it is close enough to be helpful for a new GM.

A month or two ago, this community was a great inspiration for helping me rename a hack (Live Fast).

I also have an epic/heroic fantasy that I am working on. It is currently called “Blades in the Brokenlands.” However, that was based on a specific setting. I’d like it to be more portable to existing fantasy settings.

Right now, I’m thinking-

Forged in Steel (but what about magic?)

Tales of the Blade

Bard’s Tale (oops, that was the name of a game that burned out my Apple IIc)

Fellowship (taken, but I like the emphasis on the crew / party)

1. Has anyone integrated Fiasco into Blades? I’m thinking about doing it as a “flashback” to show how the characters got their start as a crew. I’ll have to do some tweaks (e.g. they can’t die). I also want a role for the GM, but would have to force that the GM’s character is NOT part of the crew by the end. The session would actually have an impact on the game – it will impact starting faction relationships, potential rivals, etc.

Hi all – Here is Version 1.7 of Live Fast – a Blades in the Dark hack for modern & near future settings.

Hi all – Here is Version 1.7 of Live Fast – a Blades in the Dark hack for modern & near future settings. If you have a chance to play test, send me feedback at ebrunsell@gmail.com.

Danny Ocean? Ethan Hunt? Dominic Toretto? They have nothing on you. Style, stealth and speed – you and your crew have it in spades.

Live Fast is a game about a group of thrill-seeking characters in a close-knit crew who swindle, steal, and shoot their way to infamy and fortune – or die trying. The game takes place in a fictional setting that looks just like our modern world.

It includes:

New art.

New vehicle (and drone) rules.

8 playbooks (Chessmaster, Driver, Egghead, Grifter, Hitter, Spook, Thief, & Trickster).

3 crewbooks (Disposable Heroes, Scoundrels, Throttle Hoppers)

World building prompts and worksheet

A “Maltese Falcon” character arc option.

New approach to claims maps (goals, obstacles, and rewards)

Inspirational websites and a bunch of generator tables.

Hi all!

Hi all!

Hi all!

I’m working with Ray Chou and Kerby Lambert on a Forged in the Dark hack of the Skies of Fire comic series. A book compiling the first 4 issues of the comic is nearing the end of it’s Kickstarter campaign (funded @ 331%). We are a few hundred dollars away from a stretch goal that will support getting our hack to alpha testing!

Scoundrels in Airships….what could be better?

Hi all — I really appreciate the feedback, thoughts and insight!

Hi all — I really appreciate the feedback, thoughts and insight!

For my modern hack – Live Fast (formerly One Last Job), I decided to create some optional rules to allow for cyberpunk, urban fantasy, or fantasy cyberpunk settings. I posted the augmentation rules earlier. Here is a draft of my optional MAGIC SYSTEM. It needs feedback and playtesting! Although the fluff might not fit, I do think that the system has potential to fit in any setting where freeform (and fairly powerful) magic exists.

I really enjoy R.S. Belcher’s books, so this magic system is inspired by his “kitchen sink fantasy” worlds. It is individualistic and freeform. Each user defines how they acquire power and how their use of power manifests. They may base their practice on the esoteric beliefs of the Cult of Pythagoras or a modern interpretation of alchemy, or they can forge their own path by seeing economic patterns while daytrading. The cosmos really doesn’t care how you get your head around the shape of reality.

The mechanics include artificing (crafting) and theurgy that are quite similar to Blades in the Dark and a freeform ritual process (spellcasting) that simply uses a Magnitude table.

Power is gained by enacting their gnosis during downtime to open their mind to the universe or by converting Juice (stress). Gnosis is improved like a special ability. Power is spent using the Magnitude table to manifest and effect. Power can be stored in crafted Talismans and Users can even find a familiar companion.

I did include 13 example magical philosophies / orders to inspire a player to create their character’s unique Gnosis.

The “Price of Power” in this draft is probably too harsh (same as drawbacks in my Augmentation rules). I have an idea on how to fix it, but I want to do at least one playtest first.
