I’ve got a question about v8 and the change in Load.

I’ve got a question about v8 and the change in Load. The way I read it now, Light is up to 3 and Medium is up to 5 (as it was) … but Heavy 6+, capped at 8.

Do I understand it right? Because it seems to me that if I do, it would be easier to phrase that as 3 / 5 / 8 instead of 3 / 5 / 6+. Or 1-3 / 4-5 / 6-8 maybe. Having heavy listed as 6+ confuses me a little.

  1. I’d say that Heavy load (read: strapped for combat) is up to 6. Beyond 6 is encumbered. Sure you can go to 8, but it’s slowing you down significantly. Are both of your hands free? or are they holding that giant mirror you pilfered from Scurlock’s manor?

Note: that isn’t of course factoring in crew upgrades (like hawkers rigging) and special abilities (like mule).

  2. I guess that could be what it means, but it’s not clear. p57 says you choose load, and Heavy is 6+, and the maximum a normal person can carry is 2 higher than heavy. If 7 or 8 isn’t included in heavy load, why is Heavy 6+ rather than 6 as it used to be? I assume there’s a reason for the change.

And yeah, not taking into account abilities that change load for this question.

  3. But you just choose your Load range, right? So you choose Heavy, but the penalties of being encumbered don’t crop up until you choose 7+ load-worth of items. Right?

  4. Okay, so I’m a pedant, I’m sorry, but: So a Cutter can carry a Heavy load, 6, and not be encumbered. They can carry 7-8 and be encumbered.

And if they’re a mule, they can carry 10 but still be encumbered from 7-10?

  5. Thanks 🙂 So, to be super clear – Heavy is 6 load, and going beyond that is Encumbered… and when you choose your loadout, you can only go as far as Heavy, right? (Barring special abilities)
