I’m really struggling with the Downtime phases. My group doesn’t like boardgames type of play and mechanically driven scenes.

When playing the downtime phase, it feels like a boardgame with limitations: pick an action on the list – play the scene. I know the phases are meant to be played loosely, as indications, but I just fail at providing a smooth rp experience when dealing with it. This really leads to a dealbreaker when everything else works perfectly fine for us. I’m planning to skip the downtime phases from the campaign, but I’m pretty sure I’m missing something.

Anyone would have advices to play it smoothly, not breaking the game too much, or mentions actual play episode where John or anyone deals with that phase after a score?

A few questions from our last session :

– before a score, the PC wanted to do some preparations: they gathered informations, and wanted to “prepare” stuffs (go see contacts, arrange things).. I directly cut through the score but we were wondering. Can the PC do a few gather information rolls, or only one? When do you choose to cut the action and trigger the engagement roll? When they’re not directly planning in ooc or rp conversations, but actually doing things, do you cut or do you let them? There is a blur boundary between freeplay and the score. Some of my PC were like “ok you cut it off but we could made lots of stuff before”. Struggling with that.

– When you’re at war, your hold becomes weak. When the war finishes, does the hold becomes strong again, or do you have to pay Rep for it?

– does anyone could tell me which episode of RollPlay or the Bloodletters is about the engagement roll (not only the first one in the ballroom, just want to see how John deals with engagement rolls)

Hi, questions about smugglers scores and their content, and about when to trigger the engagement roll.

Some help to improvise scores for smugglers? What does a smuggler score looks like? What does a twist looks like?

It’s obvious for assassins or spy, but I have trouble for smugglers to give a smuggling feel. For instance, I just dropped a score with the leviathan hunter that cannot dock because of an administrative blockade, and they started in a desperate situations. So I went with an unexpected mutiny, but some players felt it was too skirmish orientated for a smuggler job?

Also, how much things do you play before the score, in freeplay? I mean, they want to do a score, they gather information, but then they go see contacts, try to prepare in some way (but not stuck in a conversation without actions). When do you trigger the engagement roll?

How do you deal “fiction first” with “You have only two downtime actions”

How do you deal “fiction first” with “You have only two downtime actions” ? If the players just do their stuff, how do I say “hmm you only have 2 actions and you just played them”, or these kind of stuffs? Seems that there is a system restrictions to fiction, no? How do you deal with that?

Hi all

Hi all

Hi all,

I just read some 2015 threads and now I’m doubting about some rules :

– some threads talked about “rolling for effect”. What I understand is : you roll for action, then you inflinct a consquence. You choose the effect depending on the scale, the quality and the potency of the action. You don’t roll for effect. These are all threads, but now i’m doubting : do you choose the effect, or do you roll for effect after the action roll? (which means two rolls for 1 action)?

– When a PC choose to resist to effect: can he resist for the effect of any consequence, or only to wounds?
