Just a quick note for anyone working on a hack who might be stuck on what to work on next…. make a character sheet. After seeing the amazing Blood Red Clouds in the Western Sky hack here, I went to work on my own character sheet, and it really clarified a ton of things for me. Like, I had a lot of really useless actions that were much more obviously out of place when put on the character sheet.

Plus, making a character sheet is fun 🙂 If you don’t have a fancy design tool, Google Drawings is free and works really well (it’s part of google drive, go to New->More… and choose google drawing).

Starting up a new Scum and Villainy game soon. One of my players wants to play a Manufactured Mystic that uses The Way to “see the matrix” when he hacks into things so I created an alternate starting ability for him. I would love some feedback. Is this too strong? Too weak? Overlap too much with another ability?

Ghost in the Machine

When you push yourself on a HACK action, you may make a fortune ATTUNE roll. On a 1-3, the visions granted by The Way are too cloudy to decipher and grant you no additional effects. On a 4-5, The Way guides your mind and highlights appropriate exploits; you gain potency on this HACK. On a 6, you become one with the machine; you gain potency on this HACK and the stress cost is refunded. On a critical, you gain potency, the stress cost is refunded and you clear 1 stress.

The year is 21XX.

You play a group of disenfranchised punks, poor suits, and gifted experts, trying to survive in a cyberpunk dystopia full of power hungry corporations, underworld gangs, and unknowable alien artificial intelligences. Hack a CEO’s computer to blackmail them, start your own company, or steal corporate resources for your own ends.

This playtest folder includes everything you’ll need to play, including a rule book, playbooks, and rules reference sheets.

For those familiar with Blades in the Dark you can check out the version history at the start of the rule book for a good rundown on whats different.

With this latest iteration done my next step is to go back to playtesting. Can’t wait to see what I’ll need to change!

Hi Hackers in the Dark 😀

This is Zona Zero One a (in my opinion) complete gameable hack of Blades in the Dark on one sheet of paper. Ok its font size 7pt but well still readable 😛

It was created during my flight back from Gen Con, during ~4 hours of writing/editing/layouting. It is heavily inspired by the format which is used by Grant Howitt. I realy like his one page format RPGs.

I would be happy about a bit of feedback.

Cheers,

Vandel

In honour of “Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer day”, here’s an update on Blood Red Clouds in the Western Sky, my deadwood/RDR/Blood Meridian inspired Forged in the Dark hack.

In this release there are action descriptions and the gang sheets (as well as the playbooks from last time). The gangs are Hired Guns, Outlaws, the Concern, and Revolutionaries.

I’ve also made some tweaks to the playbooks, particularly around making the game more deadly; removing heavy armour and adding in a “complication clock” to level 2 & 3 harm, giving the GM another lever to escalate harm (e.g. blood loss, infected wound, dehydration, fever, etc). Burdens have also been changed from the standard Traumas.

Your feedback/thoughts more than welcome!

Hey all

Hey all

Hey all,

My group was excited to play as a Deathland Scavengers crew. However, Andy Owlington’s homebrew crew sheet was incomplete, so I took a crack at finishing it and adding in my own ideas. My group is gonna start play testing it soon and would love some feedback on the special abilities and claims.

Basic concept revolves around exploring old ruins, using cohorts, being raiders and outlaws, and dealing with the spirits beyond the lightning fields. I have a few other abilities and ideas I left on the cutting room floor if what’s there is lacking or too complex.

Thanks and props to Andy for the initial ideas and designs.

MYRPG

Player Characters

– Make up a name, central trait, and two side traits

– Central traits are what you character is and/or does

– Side traits represent skills, equipment, weapons or vehicles

– Set one trait at 3d and the other two at 2d

– Everything Else is set at 1d

– Create a flaw. When your flaw is in play you roll 0d and gain a hero point. Or spend a hero point and roll normally

– Start with one hero point

Example character

– Name: Zachary Quinn

– Central trait: World’s Greatest Inventor 3d

– Side trait: Running 2d

– Side trait: Experimental Rocketship 2d

– Everything Else: 1d

– Flaw: Terrible with People 0d

– Hero points: 1

Action resolution

– Only players roll dice

– Select a trait or flaw that covers the situation

– Roll # of dice in a trait minus difficulty set by gm (1-3)

– Add 1d for each helper – helpers also suffer consequences of bad rolls

– Take the highest result, or if trait + help – difficulty = 0 or less, roll 2 dice and take the lowest result.

– 6 = full success, more than one 6 = critical success

– 4 or 5 = a mixed result

– 2 or 3 = a bad result

– 1 = a worse result

– Spend a hero point to re-roll any number of dice once per roll

– Take a condition to re-roll any number of dice once per roll

Conditions

– Angry

– Scared

– Exhausted

– Injured

– Unconscious

– Broken

– Roleplay any Conditions your character has

– Conditions each add one to difficulty on rolls

– Conditions are cleared during refresh scenes or at gm’s discretion

– Unconscious characters will recover in the next scene or can spend a hero point to recover in the same scene

– Broken characters are completely incapacitated and will need either hospital, and/or psychiatric care, or the equivalent to recover

Refresh scenes

– Occur during character downtimes or can be flashbacks

– Can involve any number of the player characters

– Participating characters gain one hero point and mark off any appropriate conditions at the gm’s discretion

End of session

– Gain a hero point

– Gain an experience point (xp) for each “yes” answer

1. Did you participate in the session?

2. Did your central trait come into play?

3. Did your flaw come into play?

4. Did you put yourself at risk for the other characters?

5. Have you learned something new? (what is it?)

– If you have 5 or more xp, trade in 5 xp to increase one trait by 1d, or take a new trait at 2d (Maximum trait limits are to be set by the gm)

– If you can justify it to the gm, you may change one of your traits to something new, especially if the trait represents a piece of equipment, a weapon, or a vehicle

– If something happened in the session that justifies it, you may change your flaw to something new

Vehicle Traits

– Vehicle traits start with a central trait at their die level, two side traits at one level below, and a Flaw at 0d

– The gm can award additional traits to vehicles as play goes on

– Vehicles also have any or all of the following conditions

– Needs Fuel

– Needs Supplies

– Slowed

– Crippled

– Busted

– Characters operating vehicles can use the vehicle traits to aid their rolls

Example vehicle

– Name: XR-1

– Central trait: Experimental Rocketship 2d

– Side trait: Rayguns 1d

– Side trait: Stealthy 1d

– Flaw: Easily Damaged 0d

I’ve been loosely daydreaming about converting Blades into something akin to a solo card game, and to do that I think I would need to reduce the amount of actions from 12 to 8 to make things a bit more manageable.

Sooo.. I’ve been thinking about….

A) removing Command from the list, arguing that it could be considered to just be an “angry or imposing sway”.

B) Combining Prowl and Skirmish into Scramble ( from SaV )

C) Removing Survey, arguing that it’s just a “larger study”.

I am looking for other ideas regarding removals, substitutions or replacements that may be possible due to the overlap of the way that actions work. Any ideas?

Hi all!

Hi all!

Hi all!

I’m working with Ray Chou and Kerby Lambert on a Forged in the Dark hack of the Skies of Fire comic series. A book compiling the first 4 issues of the comic is nearing the end of it’s Kickstarter campaign (funded @ 331%). We are a few hundred dollars away from a stretch goal that will support getting our hack to alpha testing!

Scoundrels in Airships….what could be better?
