In honour of “Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer day”, here’s an update on Blood Red Clouds in the Western Sky, my deadwood/RDR/Blood Meridian inspired Forged in the Dark hack.

In this release there are action descriptions and the gang sheets (as well as the playbooks from last time). The gangs are Hired Guns, Outlaws, the Concern, and Revolutionaries.

I’ve also made some tweaks to the playbooks, particularly around making the game more deadly; removing heavy armour and adding in a “complication clock” to level 2 & 3 harm, giving the GM another lever to escalate harm (e.g. blood loss, infected wound, dehydration, fever, etc). Burdens have also been changed from the standard Traumas.

Your feedback/thoughts more than welcome!

  1. It looks beautiful! I find I like the bullet graphic used for the Attribute xp tracks a lot more than the graphic used for Rep, Hold, Heat, Wanted Level, etc. Those latter graphics would be hard to tell at a glance whether or not they’re filled in.

  2. I really love the renaming of everything. It’s so evocative. I especially like “Chicanery” and “Perspicacity” and all the new burdens. I also like the role options and the new xp trigger “You called for a scene to highlight your role in the gang.”

  3. Oh man, this is excellent. Love the playbook titles and special ability names generally, but when I saw “I’m your huckleberry” under the Dandy, I laughed aloud. Take my money now.

  4. Thank you all, really appreciate the support..!

Benjamin Davis Yes, that’s one that definitely needs some playtesting – but I think it could be a lot of fun. The whole Believer playbook should probably be optional depending on how surreal/supernatural the table wants the campaign to be. Personally, when I think about something like Blood Meridian, it’s dripping with metaphysical dread, so I’d like that option on the table.

Eli Kurtz That’s a good call, I agree actually – I’ll think about something simpler for those that’s more readable at a glance. Cheers!

  5. Tim Denee Any idea where we can follow the progress of Blood Red Clouds once G+ shuts down? I’m really looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
