I went on a trip to Boston this weekend, and found one game store. And in that game store (Pandemonium Books and Games), I found one copy of a hardback of Blades in the Dark. Spotted in the wild!

I have a question for everyone: what did the end of your campaign look like?

I’m curious what victory or defeat for various crews came out like. Obviously one possibility is that everyone died, but I bet there are far more interesting conclusions out there.

Looking for inspiration (ie things to steal) from how others have used psychonauts, and the shadow crew’s Ghost Echo ability in their games. My brain keeps toying with ideas of trying to use them almost like a Gloompunk cyberspace/netrunner analog.

My group is having trouble trying to wrap our brains around the whole The Church of the Ecstacy is both a state religion complete with temples and cathedrals and daily services, and at the same time a not so secret, secret society. Can anyone lend a hand?

Some things are on the sheets but not in the book. (That’s a problem.) Some things are in the book but not on the sheet. (That’s probably not a problem, since you OUGHT to buy the book to play. But the sheets are ALMOST a complete startup guide, so…)

1. A lot of the basic stat info is only available in graphic form on the character sheets. How many stress does a character get? How much rep does it cost to level up a crew’s tier? How do rep and turf work together?

Because there are no character sheets in the book, and this info isn’t available in other forms, we’ve had to do things like count the number of boxes so we can create Google Docs of the info. Not terrible, but odd.

2. You can’t completely create a crew or generate a character without referring to the character sheets. Most RPGs either give a narrative account of character generation in the player’s guide that can be followed, or at least have character sheets in the book to refer to.

3. Same thing goes for advancement; the book is much more difficult to follow than the sheets.

4. This is super-minor, but it would be awesome if there were stats for the Leech’s Alchemicals on the character sheet. Barring that, they should be assembled somewhere in the book rather than spread throughout the Crafting chapter.

These are all minor criticisms, really. Blades is a great game, and it particularly scratches an itch I’ve had for a while to do a heist game. The stress/flashback mechanic reproduces a fun cinematic heist without getting bogged down in planning before the fun begins. It’s like a Steampunk Ocean’s 11! THANKS!
