I’ve encountered some confusion on this subject recently, so i figured i’d just ask the community here if the following is correct:
– Accepting help from a teammate gives you +1d
– Pushing yourself gives you +1d OR increased effect
– Accepting a devil’s bargain gives you +1d
– Taking advantage of a set up action gives you improved position OR improved effect
– The only other way to improve the effect of a roll is to accept a worse position
Are any of the above statements incorrect?
Most of the statements are correct, however I would say the last statement is incorrect. There are all kinds of ways to improve your effect: fine or special equipment, various special abilities, fictional positioning, etc.
Also, not all of these dice stack. You can either get help or push yourself, not both IIRC.
Ariel Cayce I believe it’s Devils Bargain and Push Yourself that don’t stack. Not sure about help
Jonathan Konig is correct. Help stacks with either.
Thanks all! Mostly i wanted to identify what actions a player can take to adjust effect after the GM establishes it (with fictional positioning, tools and abilities taken into consideration already)
To add to the above, I also like to houserule devils bargains to give effect or +1d at the GMs choice. (Especially because it can replace a Push Yourself).
“If you want some extra effect with that spear you could move out of the alleyway and into the street where you can wield it better, but people are going to see you if you do. Effect for 2 heat, do we have a deal?”
Also worth noting that a player can push themselves up to 3 times at once so long as they pick different effects for the push (I.e. they could spend 6 stress to gain +1d, bonus effect, and act with Level 3 Harm).
