Hi all-

Hi all-

Hi all-

Here is the next version (V0.5) of the character playbooks for my epic / heroic fantasy hack – Blades in the Brokenlands. The playbooks include:

Fighter Archetype (Berserker, Hunter, Weapon Master)

Magi Archetype (Alchemist, Enchanter, Weaver)

Rogue Archetype (Thief, Swashbuckler, Watcher)

The Innocent (a peasant hero, naive adventurer, or the classic young hero in epic fantasy stories).

Although this doesn’t have a crew (party) sheet or XP triggers (I forgot to add) they are playable.

The unedited rulebook with initial setting information can be found here.

I’d love feedback!

  1. Few nitpicks:

    1. Berserker, ancestor spirit: “damage reduced by one harm level” sounds like permanent armor. I guess it doesn’t suppose to be.

    2. the Weaver shadow ability really sounds like it’s suppose to be a spacial armor. that what the special armor box is for.

    3. I think the innocent have way too many special armor abilities, unless you give him extra special armor, he have too many uses for a really limited resource. you might what your innocent to “go up a level” at some point and adopt a different archetype. Band of Blades does something similar.

    4. if you didn’t read it, I think you should check what Karma in the Dark did with it’s archetype. it is not necessarily the best approach, but it is similar to your archetype-shared abilities, and might be a good source to steal ideas from

    5. keep up the good work, the hack looks great 🙂

  2. Roe Portal Thank you for the feedback-

Karma in the Dark is an awesome hack.

    1. The Berserker ability to reduce harm by one is basically the same as the Hound’s Tough as Nails ability.

    2. That is true regarding special armor. However, it does still keep the special armor “slot” free for other uses (like Warded). It really is just armor at no load…but poorly worded! [Mixed with Unbreakable, the Berserker is one heck of a Tank!]

    3. Band of Blades’ Rookie playbook did inspire The Innocent. That playbook is intended to be the classic “youngster pushed out of the nest to go on a world-saving quest” character from most epic fantasy tales. The intent is that a player will develop the character and then switch to a new playbook. There are three requirements built into the rules. (1) When you take a second level of Shame / Trauma, you must change playbooks – you are no longer innocent. (2) You start with one less action rating, do not get a Heritage Trait, and can only take abilities from this playbook. You are limited to 1 special ability plus musician. (3) When you switch playbooks, gain your Heritage Trait.

Those rules are on the sheet., but #2 in particular can be easy to miss. I’ll also include them in the character creation steps.

  3. Eric Brunsell really interesting hack! However, the way the Berserker ability is phrased is not the same as the Hound’s Tough as Nails: that ability just reduces harm penality, while this one reduces the harm level (which is way to powerful in my opinion: as Roe Portal said, it’s basically an infinite armour)

  4. Just a heads up Eric Brunsell, you mention stress in the playbook abilities, but appear to have renamed it courage. You might want to fix that.
