I finished alpha testing on the playbooks and some rule changes for this modern action hack. It doesn’t have crew types yet, but is playable!

ONE LAST JOB

Danny Ocean? Ethan Hunt? Dominic Toretto? They have nothing on you. Style, stealth and speed – you and your crew have it in spades.

One Last Job is a game about a group of thrill-seeking characters in a close-knit crew who swindle, steal, and shoot their way to infamy and fortune – or die trying. The game takes place in a fictional setting that looks just like our modern world.

Character playbooks include: Chessmaster, Driver, Egghead, Grifter, Infiltrator, Hitter, (Street) Magician, Spook.

Each player also defines a “Maltese Falcon” (MacGuffin) for their character so that the GM can engage the crew in character story arcs as well as the crew arc.

The Crew types will provide the opportunity play drastically different games. The crews are still in “alpha.” Cleaners (inspired by Mission Impossible and Expendables), Disposable Heroes (inspired by The A-Team and Leverage), Scoundrels in Suits (inspired by the Italian Job and Ocean’s series), The Syndicate (inspired by organized crime movies), Throttle Hoppers (inspired by the Fast & Furious series), Vagabonds (inspired by ???).

  1. Cool stuff, I like the look of it.

So would a Bunch of Bikers be Syndicate or Throttle Hoppers? And Vagabonds would be like the street clan in John Wick II? I tried to call a playbook “Cleaner” in an unfinished hack/game I tried to run some time back, and at least with those guys it caused no end of confusion. There was a good contention that they thought it was a dude that cleaned up after crimes, like the Wolf in Pulp Fiction, and not a cool slick assassin type like I had intended. Just sharing for contrast

  2. Greg Barnsdale Thanks — I’ve been trying to think of a better name for Cleaners. Perhaps Soldiers of Fortune, but the problem is that they are more problem solver (mission impossible) than mercenaries in a more traditional military conflict.

A Band of Bikers would mostly likely be Throttle Hoppers. The Syndicate crew type is built around the “board of directors” of a criminal syndicate. A player has two characters. One is on the Board and controls one independent facet of operations (during downtime) and the second character is a member of an elite syndicate team(with other PCs) that solves problems as directed by the Board. This is the one that will take me the most time in order to make the Board actions interesting and meaningful.

  3. Greg Barnsdale By the way, the Band of Bikers could also be Vagabonds if they were trick performers that traveled the world…and caused trouble on the side.
