So I’ve been doing some serious work on a Planescape hack called #Gatecrashers. It’s not ready for public consumption, but I came to a realization which might be interesting to #DnD setting hackers out there.

Every Tavern should specialize in a Vice, and if possible link to a Faction/Rep/Heat.

Give your tavern scenes teeth.

  1. Have you made any mechanical changes? I did quite a bit of tweaking to magic, heat, rep, vice & entanglements for my “blades in the broken lands” hack. I did one play test and the rule changes seem solid. I just need to get the setting from my head to “paper”

  2. It’s mostly a thought process. Taverns should never be safe for rogues – they should sink barbs into you to get you back. They are your vice merchants.

If you’re talking mechanical, then there’s possibly a (bad, will explain*) meta idea (borrowed from Wick’s Wilderness suppement) that you’re all sitting around in a tavern bragging about your adventures (to explain load and flashbacks, etc). Or maybe it’s just stupor. With a side of blackmail.

Taverns and innkeepers are your vice dealers. They are not safe and will mess you up if you play up. So who’s up for a tavern brawl?

*This is bad because we want Action Forward.

  3. Eric Brunsell i realized you might be asking about the Planescape hack. Yeah lots of little tweaks, it’s running at about 40 pages, with another 40 dedicated to Sigil.

A lot of the words are directly from other sources though, so part of the process is reworking the descriptions into something slightly darker.
