I had a question about Heat in Scum and Villainy. Looking at version 1.7 of the rules, it seems to say you burn a flat 2 Heat with a downtime action and your roll only changes your Wanted level. Do I have that right or does it work like in Blades in the Dark?

  1. This is my reading too, though note that it adds to the Wanted Level reduction clock for whatever system you’re rolling for, meaning you’re gonna have to Lay Low a few times (even if you roll a Crit) to reduce the Wanted Level by 1.

  2. That is correct Andrew. You read it right.

SaV heat/wanted is a little different (it’s tracked per system for example). And wanted is what changes your rolls (you roll differently for entanglements, and worse ones crop up if you’re wanted) and makes travel more difficult. So heat is not as much of an issue and chipping away at those clocks is the bigger deal which is what the Lay Low move reflects.

  3. My players have become Wanted in Iota with no way to reduce it unless they get out of the system, and now they’ve been offered an opportunity in Iota that they really don’t want to pass on, probably making them even more Wanted … good luck getting out of the system *evilgm*. They DID say they wanted to fight the Hegemony :).

So what I want to say is that the changes to Heat/Wanted in S&V reflect the changed fiction very well, in particular the fact that becoming Wanted is a real problem for the crew.
