Hacking Blades for a Mythic Approach: The Navigator

Being vehicle oriented sucks in games. The poor cavalier never got much use out of his horse in the dungeon, and the rigger is frequently stuck in the van.

An islander setting needs a hero who focuses on the boat but is useful outside of it. This Navigator playbook hopefully shows the idea of travel, discovery and arrival expanded upon.

That’s it for these, folks. You’ve shown interest have provided great feedback. I thank you for that. Now it’s time to take my frankly terrifying notes from local playtest groups and turn them into something compact and elegant for you.

  1. “This Navigator playbook hopefully shows the idea of travel, discovery and arrival expanded upon.” – It does! There are some clever ways to get and keep this guy involved.

Regarding “What has been will be again”: Since the die is picked up after the roll, I assume it’s value is kept. So if the player rolls more sixes than he needs, he can keep one?

  2. I think it means until the die is used the player has to roll with one die less in his pool for this specific action rating. It balances this mechanic well, in my opinion.

  3. Skasi Correct. Benjamin Davis Looks like I need to tighten up some language, thank you.

I’m still thinking about other playbooks. Do any of you feel that a type is missing? Did any of you ever see the Sorcerer? I posted that one first, but it may have been too big for G+.

  4. I didn’t see a Sorcerer. What was different to Trickster and Sage?

And maybe a playbook for a Captain (leader) would fit to the selection.

  5. I think it might be better to put the boat on the Navigator’s character sheet, with consequence of its own, and probably a Flaw and Perk , like a crew’s expert (the boat can be Old, Swift, Smelly, Armed, Haunted, Armoured, ext’).

Also, can the boat be a caravan or an Appa styled great beast instead?

  6. Roe Portal Those are great ideas! Currently the boat lives on the reverse of the Island sheet, in an oceanic world there needs to be a vehicle even if there’s not a Navigator player.

I love the idea of expanding out from a vanilla catamaran though!

Shoot, need to add Avatar to the influences section too.
