Last night we did our first Blades game, it went pretty well, but it was definitely a challenging start. Character creation took a long time and crew creation was pretty challenging too. We eventually settled on playing Shadows, we had a hound, a whisper, a leach, a lurk a slide and a spider.

The part with Bazo Baz worked out good as we had already allied with the Lampblacks and our Slide was buddies with him.

Our GM had trouble figuring out where to go after the initial engagement roll. He got a good idea of where the war stash was being kept, on an old broken down riverboat and former casino in Tangletown.

Figuring out the rest of the score was super tough for him. So Im all ears for GM advice to share with him.

  1. Can we assume the GM asked what the crew’s approach was? The context to interpret the engagement roll is based on that approach.

I’m curious what number was actually rolled for the engagement?

  2. A 6 and yeah he did… but we walked in the front door as muscle escorting a bevy of hookers and drugged wine to the Red Sashes as a reward from their “boss” …

  3. What was your approach? Where did the hookers and drugged wine come from (simply curious)? How did he narrate the Controlled position?

Also, you had six PCs! That’s a potentially tough run for any GM, let alone a new one! I tip my hat.

Edit: Your score (the Red Sash war treasury) brings back very fond memories of a score I ran a time ago). Such a great bit to cut your teeth on. 🙂

  4. It was subterfuge we showed up as a gift from the sashes boss to get the, pumped for an offensive against the lamp blacks the next day. “Drink and screw boys we’re gonna fuck the lamp blacks up tomorrow!”

  5. How did the GM set you in Controlled? How did the overall score go? Did you all kick ass?

Hint: The answer is both “Fuck” and “yes!”, as no matter what happens, PCs kick ass in a John Harper game.

  6. Our controlled started when the sentry came up to our guy and was like I don’t recognize you. Our guy wearing a sash was like well I know who the fuck you are and if you work for us you sure as shit need to know who I am. Totally using command on the guy. He backed down quick. We totally kicked ass, thats for sure… I was just hoping for more skin of the teeth ass kicking. Of course our little complication at the end is that the Crows had a guy on the inside trying to bust the safe too… and he was the only one not drinking the drugged wine and he came and announced that he knew who we were and what the hell we were doing. So I shot him in the back of the head and dumped his body in the safe after we stole all the sashes shit. Im cant wait for the entanglement roll right now because of it cause its going to be juicy!

  7. That’s sounds like an awesome score! Tell your GM it went well! Damn, that’s great stuff.

If you’ll indulge me, the crazy bit for the war treasury score the crew I GM’d for was to clean it out, then place the head of the decapitated assassin the Red Sashes had sent after Sapphire, the Lurk. A solid flashback created a trap door in the vault floor that allowed the crew to escape through the sewers. It was a very sexy bit of larceny!
