There’s no time for a downtime action during a score, so I don’t really know how you would be able to perform a downtime action during a score.
But there’s really no need to perform a downtime action without also using a flashback, since flashing back to a downtime action does not cost any stress.
I have a follow-up question. Are the downtime actions performed as part of a flashback considered to be part of the last downtime or are they considered as external to it?
I am asking this because, in case of downtime actions like training, it is important to know if the action is part of the same downtime phase or not.
My view is that the fiction says that you’re literally flashing back to something you did during that very downtime, so it counts as part of the same downtime phase.
I think the book says that downtime used as part of a flashback costs 1 coin or 1 rep in lieu of stress… I don’t think it’s supposed to be free? Page 139.
Adam Norwick I mean, I’d argue it might cost the coin or rep AND the stress if they didn’t have any downtime actions left over. The extra downtime action would have cost a coin or rep if they’d taken it during downtime, and flashbacks cost stress.
Otherwise, if the crew is cash-tight but not bad on stress, it becomes optimal to wait to do flashback downtime actions instead of doing them during downtime.

Jakob Oesinghaus the question is can you do a downtime action without a flashback. For instance, if it looks like you are going to acquire an asset in the middle of a score (say look for a safecracker on a stick safe), you don’t need to do it in a flashback. You just use the downtime action rule for acquire an asset … in the middle of a score.
