So, one of my players wants to kill off his character through suicide to become a Ghost, and then a Vampire as quickly as possible. Is it kind of cheesing it to just kill your character in order to become a vampire? Has anyone had experience with a player who was a Ghost/Vampire?

  1. “Is it kind of cheesing it to just kill your character”?

I’d turn that question around. If the player wants to play a vampire, why not skip the steps? We don’t force someone to play through medical school before they can be a leech.

There are advantages to playing through – some abilities are kept during the transition to ghost & vampire, and you gain abilities faster when alive then when a vampire – so if it’s a longer running campaign they might want to grab those first before dying.

But assuming that’s not their goal, if all they’re really after is getting to RP as a vampire, my questions are:

    – Are you happy with them playing as a vampire? If so, just let them play as a vampire. If not, tell them you don’t want to allow it.

    – Do they want to roleplay the death, ghost, and possession? If so, that sounds like great RP for the whole group! If not, just let them assume it happened before the gameplay starts.

You can always do flashback scenes to when they were alive, or when they were a ghost!

In general, my attitude is that all we’re doing when roleplaying is “playing make believe” with a group of friends. If it’ll be more fun to skip something, or if it’ll be more fun to ignore a rule, then… do whatever will be fun. Who cares about whether it’s “cheese” or not? If the player enjoys themselves, you’ve succeeded.

  2. as Michael Sands says sure let them try. I’m sure making the death to ghost to vampire jump is real easy. I mean as it’s sooooo easy it’s a wonder why everyone isn’t doing it, why there aren’t hordes of vampires running around. I’m sure their character totally knows what they are doing and won’t run into any issues or consequences.

  3. Actually, “A vampirism movement in the 6th century of the Imperium achieved significant popularity before it was eradicated by the Spirit Wardens.” (page 211)

I’m sure there are still rituals that don’t require a messy suicide part, that just tear out the soul and immediately reinsert it again.
