We solved the initial problem with using the Command action rating when you play with your pet, for example i command the pet to condition him to act in a way., roll for it.

Is this the way it is supposed to be or is there another mechanic going into this?

  1. In my game, we treat the pet as a cohort, meaning you command it to do something as a teamwork action (you roll Command, it rolls it’s quality (where fine is 1), and you take stress if the pet fails and take the highest result from the two as the roll.

So for example, if you have 1 in Command and a Fine Hunting pet, we would have the Hound roll his command (1d6) and the GM would roll for the fine hunting pet (1d6). The highest result of the 2 rolls is the end result.

You could also argue for other rolls besides command, like Swaying the pet with food, or having your pet help you Hunt for example.

The description of the pet also says that, aside from obeying commands, it anticipates your actions, meaning it may act on it’s own in relation to it’s owner’s actions if the situation is right for it.

  2. As of V8 you’ll no longer upgrade cohorts individually, they will have a quality level (in the area they have expertise) = your tier. When you have Elite gangs (like Elite rooks), they will get +1 quality (so Tier +1).

Experts (individuals) start out as Quality = Tier +1. So a starting Hound’s pet has Quality 1 (since Blades start at Tier 0).

  3. How to treat the pet is something of a question I’ve had when playing my Hound. Thus far its only really influenced the effect in a scene by impacting scale. I assumed that if I was going to have it go off and operate independently that I’d probably be rolling Command.

Good to know they’re going to be cohorts in V8! So very excited for the final version of the rules.
