Alright, this is a bit of a big file, but I’ve made quite a bit of progress on my Star Trek Hack since my last post. This pdf contains character and crew creation, plus example characters and ship. Character creation is currently limited to the main shipboard roles (later I may add playbooks for Klingons, Androids, etc.). There are still some issues (not all playbooks have a complete list of abilities, I haven’t settled on length of trauma clock, and items aren’t totally sorted out), but I feel like this is a solid alpha entry. Also, I’ve settled on a working title of Where No One has Gone. Any and all constructive feedback is welcomed.

Last, I’m going to be at Gen Con this week. If anyone would be interested in joining for a one shot playtest, let me know! Or if anyone just wants to say hi to a fellow Blades fan/hacker.

  1. hi fellow Trekkie. We’ve both been working on this in separate workspaces. I did playbooks as departments too. The shirt colors are a nice touch. My default ship playbook is also Exploration, but Colonization also made my list (for DS9 stories).

I am withholding my specific feedback for a moment. Besides some typos, I see a lot of changes you must’ve made consciously, and most if not all of them immediately jump out to me as less-than-inspired or perhaps just a difference of intent (I want to emulate TOS, TNG, and DS9; but your effort looks more like Animated Series)

I playtested mine. if our goals do happen to align, given I already put together 2 hacks plus started on this one you are doing, and have been soaking my brain in Star Trek wikis for a week straight, I should be of some help.

Also 🙂 where should I stop critiquing? I already have a few paragraphs of feedback and Ive not gotten past the first playbook :X

  2. Mark Cleveland Massengale Honestly, my intent is made with TNG being the focus, with the possibility of bending it towards TOS or maybe VOY. My current platter group is meeting once a week and set right at the beginning on TNG. That being said, I want the ability to tell a bit more story wise that just TNG (that will definitely come out once I add in more ship types, tactical, science, and maybe medical).

If you want to do some more detailed feedback, maybe just shoot me a message so we don’t clog up too much space here?

  3. So I’ve read through the playbooks and the action list and I have a few notes. It looks like you put a lot of work into this, and you hit a lot of touchstones of the genre.

    Actions

Survey doesn’t seem to be a good choice for prowess, and fix and build are similar enough to be combined. I would suggest combining fix and build, moving survey down to intellect, and then pulling sneaking out of strive, or bring wreck back in some fashion

    Command

Born Leader – You can’t really command another PC, and divisions (which I think are analogous to gangs) don’t have ranks as far as I can tell. Is this just for random NPCs?

Renowned Commander – Do you mean +2 rep? I’m confused, your rank is captain, can it get higher? That quickly?

    Tactical

Intimidating Presence – You say Negotiate, but the word intimidate is already part of your Command action. It really sounds like it should be Fight instead of Command. The thing is, by the standard rules of Blades, you can already do this (although it may change the position and effect of your action).

Battlefield Tactics – I need to parse a few things here. Is an away team an actual game mechanic, or do you just mean lead other PCs in a group action while on an away mission? If the latter, I might rephrase this as “When you lead a group combat action on an away mission, PCs temporarily ignore penalties from their harm.” I assume the last sentence should be +1d to resistance rolls.

    Science

Knowledgeable Researcher – Losing a downtime action to give someone +1d is a bad trade, even if it doesn’t cost stress.

In general the playbooks are pretty standard. The hack looks functional enough if you really want to play star trek as blades. I don’t know that it’s a perfect fit, but it will do. None of the playbooks get me that excited with their abilities, but the Counselor is definitely the coolest.

  4. Mark Griffin thanks for the feedback! It’s definitely not an easy hack, but I’ve definitely been liking working with it. Very few systems have the group level focus that Blades does with its crew sheet, and that has been working perfectly. I’m definitely going to be taking another pass at the actions and may try to add some kick to some of the special abilities.
