Just scouring the Lady Blackbird extension – ‘Lord Scurlock’ and discovered this little gem, which I will add to by GM best practices index card to reference in play. I mean, I almost do it automatically now, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded, scan about at all the cool information we have generated right there on the table in front of us and then explicitly do the thing:

“Part of the job of the GM is listening to what the players say, catching it, turning it around, and seeing if there’s anything else to be done with it… reincorporate, play NPCs with gusto, look for interesting obstacles, impose consequences as events warrant.”

So to encourage the players to go for bigger and more desperate heists, they now get tattoos as a rep ‘counter’. Take down Lord Scurlock? Grab yourself a trio of Tatts to display your street cred with the gutter trash of Doskvol.

The skulls are for stress, the players string them on a thong of leather. Get 8 and trauma comes a knocking (the bottle caps).

Another question about ghosts. Are they always visible or only when someone uses Attune?

At first, I thought it was the latter, but the Ghost playbook says that the player must use the Dissipate power (spending stress) to become invisible.

What do you think? How do you play it?

No updates from two days this week, and that’s because I spent both Thursday and Friday in meetings regarding RPGs that I can’t yet talk about (But believe me I’ll be yelling when I can), and then travelling back to yorkshire for the day job…

However, one thing that came from both meetings was that in general, the UK doesn’t have a large enough pool of GMs, and if we’re going to grow the hobby beyond what we have, we need to start building for tomorrow, today…

And that needs the help of those who already run games who want to see the hobby grow the way I do, and who are willing to give some of their time and wisdom to those just starting out on the path…

Just re-watching Black Sails and amongst all of its scoundrel-y goodness was a gem from Captain Flint’s awareness on the price of this path:

‘Our own darkest motives will conceal themselves from us… Cloak them in whatever masks they must in order to move us into action.’

Damn fine description of a Devil’s Bargain if ever I head one.

What do we think would be an useful way to use Lifestyle Rolls vs Spending Coin?

What do we think would be an useful way to use Lifestyle Rolls vs Spending Coin? Right now, I’m leaning on an idea that Coin specifically comes out of payoff, claims, etc. and plugs back into the rules in the book like your Downtime actions, creating your Stash, advancing in Tier, Entanglements, and Devil’s Bargains, and Lifestyle Rolls are meant to cover everything else?

Also how would you narrate a bad or mixed outcome on a lifestyle roll. “You don’t have the money” just seems like a boring thing to say on a 1-3, maybe it’s better to talk about how they lost that Coin on their Vices. What the heck do you say on a Mixed Outcome? 😛
