I’m going to be running a Blades-shot at short notice this afternoon and I remembered Sean Nittner’s creepy and weird Scurlock Manor heist where you create the heist as you go. Has anyone had success running this at conventions or the like? Any tips or cool ideas? Gonna be running for some RPG first-timers so I wanna make a good impression.

I seem to recall someone saying they stripped the audio from the Bloodletters videos and made mp3s or something?

First Session Questions

Hello! I just ran my first session of Blades, and while I think I got the hang of it, I do have a few questions. These are likely basic ones, but if someone has the time to clarify things, that would be a big help.

So my understand so far is that every kind of opposition is either a single roll or a clock of sorts.

So tonight, I used a group of Red Sashes as a 6-tick clock, and just had the players make checks against the clock until it was full, then let them narrate what happened to the guards. Did I do that right?

I have two related questions. When I assign Harm or consequences via ticks on a clock for a 4/5 result. How do I know what level or how many ticks to assign? Is it determined by the die roll, the type of action (controlled, risky, desperate), or the player’s level of effect?

So if a character makes a Risky/Standard Skirmish roll and get a 4/5 how many ticks can I put on a clock or how much harm could I assign?

Thanks for the help.

Phil

Ok, so I start my first session tomorrow.

Ok, so I start my first session tomorrow. I’m playing with experienced players (in other games) who have done some of character creation pre-session. All of their stories we will tie together into a crew in session. There were a couple of questions I wanted to throw out for ideas first.

One of my players is from the internal lands of Severos, he’s from a clan and is a ghost hunting whisper. As part of character creation for friend he wants to have a friendly ghost. I obviously don’t want to say no, so have thought about options in the setting. Especially with how I can avoid overpowering a friend (I know I can reveal to them what I see appropriate to any roll but I want to make sure the fiction always seems genuine, so help with setting etc. is appreciated.)

Going by the inherent vengefulness of spirits and the quick speed a spirit will descend into that state, I was left with the following ideas for his friend

a) maybe it could be a reconciled spirit. Although extremely rare, it could be a newer reconciled, separate from the “faction” and not embroiled in their motives. I felt a member of the reconciled possessing a noble would have way too much knowledge too easy to access, possibly killing creativity. Compared to a a player with a pugilist with a few gang connections.

b) was maybe he could tap into the spirit field in a particular place or focus on a place in Severos, and contact/get a vision from a friendly entity but not without risk.

c) He has her bound somehow but she may not always fall under his authority to answer.

Ideas would be massively appreciated and any thoughts on consequences, as i’m still in the complete mind that even as a whisper there isn’t any security regarding spirits.

(Second sub question! What’s the general assumed preaching to common folk from the church of the Ecstasy of the flesh? Understanding that zealots exist, what’s the difference from the extreme to public norm.)

(Also what have your thoughts been on the immortal emperor in your games and where is the empire controlled from?)

That was longer than planned but cheers 🙂

There’s no shipyard on the map of Duskwall and I don’t remember any mention of it in the city section.

There’s no shipyard on the map of Duskwall and I don’t remember any mention of it in the city section.

Is this an oversight or is this intentional? Has it been purposely left to individual play groups to decide? Or does it mean that leviathan hunters only get repaired in this city but not built there? If so, where do they get built?

Or have I missed something relevant in the text?

Hey all–I’m interested in Blades in the Dark as a system, but the ghostpunk industrial fantasy setting, while cool, isn’t what I’m looking for. Has anyone else done the work of making a slightly more setting-agnostic, or at least supernatural-free hack of Blades yet?

I’ve seen Scum and Villainy, and Blades Against Darkness, but they go off too far in other directions for what I want. I’m basically just looking for a straight Peaky Blinders-style game: old timey gangsters, doing scores, getting into trouble, and indulging vices, just like core BitD, but without all the ghosts and demons and occult stuff. (Plus, I’m spoiled by Apocalypse World’s collaborative worldbuilding–I don’t want to play in someone else’s world, no matter how cool it is!)

Has anyone seen or done anything like this yet? Any pointers if I end up having to do the hacks myself?

I highly recommend watching the Bloodletters Youtube series, GMed by John Harper with a stellar cast of players.

I converted the whole video series into audiobooks so I can listen to them while travelling and doing chores. You can download each session as a separate audio-only file from here:
