Mothlands, Game 1

Mothlands, Game 1

Mothlands, Game 1

Today I GMed my first game of blades. In an original setting, no less.

And it went even better than I could have hoped.

When we went around the table for character creation, I had people explain their backgrounds and heritage and everyone immediately started getting into character, tying their stories together and explaining how they knew one another.

Which was good because for the last two dots I’d had the idea of asking them to think of a positive and a negative bond with their fellow player characters. I essentially got a nice little pre-game narrative in which the team agreed to hawk what they THOUGHT were strange worthless baubles off on chumps. Before the game had started we had the seeds for our first score.

The last hour or so was spent in free play with the training wheels off. They researched angles of attack, they talked to contacts, and they dabbled with the wares only to discover they weren’t so worthless after all. As we played the scenes we were also discussing what their first crew special ability would be and they chose the equivalent of “bound in darkness” (I’m using custom character and crew sheets for my setting). Suddenly, we had a reason to rope in the more hesitant PC as the activation of the device loosely connected their minds to one another by way of a silvery implant. Play inspired the advancement decisions and those initial advancement choices inspired the role play.

So now the crew is on a mission to sell the damn things BACK to the people who offloaded them on the crew in the first place. Not a bad idea considering they happen to be a network of gossips and spies. The perfect product, perhaps, but one that’s going to have far reaching political and societal implications, and they’re only just getting a foot in the door.

I was really surprised the directions the crew took and how easy it was to improvise with good input from them. We even ended up starting out the story in a different city than I had expected based largely on three of the characters sharing a common heritage.

What’s more, I had a lot of opportunities to describe (and flesh out) the setting based on their questions and their choices, and I hinted at a thing or two down the road with a couple ambiguous clocks. That really got their intention.

Considering this was the first official game for all of us, I have to hand it to John for making an evocative, intuitive, and functional game. Even with a lot of the knobs tweaked, the good stuff shined right on through.

In the ongoing misadventures the Silver Tendrils picked up a new recruit and continued to antagonize the Red Sashes, all whole advancing the plot of their bizarre god. This time we leaned on the Billhooks to earn good will with the citizens and secure some turf. We also engaged in some mystical sabotage of Red Sash related holdings in the docks and their base in Crow’s Foot. Part of this involved a formal duel between my cutter and a Sash, and me punching out one of our whispers for interfering with said duel. A power struggle between myself and the whisper seems inevitable.

We are also settling into a weird niche of supernatural drug dealers (one of the whispers noticing Ghost Market on the Hawker sheet cemented it), which is making the GM more comfortable on scores. I think he was hard pressed on what to do with a low tier cult.

The Dead Setters brought their war with Lord Strangford’s leviathan hunters to a close by returning to Duskwall from Skovland, blowing up a sloop outside Strangford’s manor, and murdering him inside his panic room. Then they bottled his spirit for eventual trade to the mirror-demon Ahazu, all in accordance with their ghost contract.

The philosophy of “talk shit, roll crits” was on full display in their two-session assault plan. While the vast array of corrupt Bluecoats, house guards, and supernatural countermeasures was not enough to stop the PCs in the fiction, it cost everyone nearly all their stress (including Richter the spider, who almost never takes a lot of stress) to pull it off.

With Strangford’s bullet-ridden corpse hiding inside his locked, secret panic room, the authorities had to proceed as if he was missing, not dead. This bogged down their usual asset seizure process so the PCs could make off with a bunch of valuables. When the Dead Setters returned to their hidden lair, however, they discovered that while they were in Skovland, Strangford completed a long-term clock called “find out where the Dead Setters live”. He traded the PCs’ lair location to the Bluecoats (the crew has a 2 Wanted level) in exchange for a few off-duty death squads at Strangford’s beck and call. So the cops seized the lair, but an epic resistance roll saw their cohort of pit fighters escape with their vault contents.

Of the Dead Setters’ other two primary locations, they took Ahazu’s offer of “help” in protecting the canal-side lair they had previously taken from the Eels. The spirit well in Coalridge was almost lost to the Spirit Wardens, but Raven the hound spent a load of stress for a complex flashback and protected it by essentially rigging it to “go off”, releasing spirits to possess a cache of stored hollows and fight off the authorities…

…essentially creating a sudden vampire plague in Coalridge. What can I say, you can’t roll sixes all the time. We’re not all Adam Koebel.

What else? They still have to do the handoff with Ahazu. They have to get Ulf Ironborn’s family, rescued from a Skovland prison, back to him (they are currently secreted on the Colossus, their stolen prototype leviathan hunting vessel which has run afoul of demonic notice). The bluecoats were able to place Raven and Teatime the whisper at the crime scene, and we haven’t rolled Heat yet.

All my games eventually turn into the end of Commando. #justbodies #talkshitrollcrits

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 47 (December 28 2016)

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 47 (December 28 2016)

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 47 (December 28 2016)

Constance discusses the Doskvol City Council members with Lady Drake:

* Ellsworth Dunne (Charhollow): Missing.

* Matthias Brogan (Charterhall): Arrested and convicted of treason, currently in Ironhook.

* Hosea Cawley (Crow’s Foot): Dead, courtesy of the Strays (at Ellsworth’s behest).

* Ettore Rodia (Nightmarket): In Constance’s pocket.

* Arnold Beckham (Whitecrown): Possibly favorable.

* Kent Hansen (Coalridge): Possibly favorable.

* Alda Monaghan (Brightstone): Possibly favorable.

* Sabine Lyness (Six Towers): Complete unknown. Appointed shortly before Lord Brogan was arrested.

* Kabeer Wakim (Silkshore): Not likely favorable, for cultural reasons.

* Gomberto Santoli (Barrowcleft): Not likely favorable, for political reasons.

* Tobias Norgaard (The Docks): Not likely favorable, for cultural reasons.

* Emmet Taylor (Dunslough): Not likely favorable, for personal reasons (which Lady Drake is initially unwilling to divulge).

Santoli’s issues with Lady Drake have entirely to do with his disapproval of some of the decisions she’s made in court. He believes her to be entirely too lenient on crime.

Norgaard was appointed at the behest of the Skovlan Consulate 10 years ago, against his wishes. He does his job, but he’s not happy about it, and he’s not happy that he has to deal every day with the Akorosi that subjugated his people. However, his sense of duty has thus far overridden his desire to go home.

Wakim is a truly rare thing in this world: an idealist. He really believes he can make a difference in his adopted city. However, the numerous racially motivated incidents in Silkshore have taken their toll. His resolve has been weakened, and he has been growing increasingly intolerant. The attack on the butcher shop has not helped matters at all.

Constance presses the issue of the personal grudge involving Lord Taylor. At first Lady Drake advises Constance to leave it alone, and insists simply that Taylor will not be swayed. When Constance threatens to walk out on the whole affair, Lady Drake reluctantly confesses that Taylor had some business dealings with the late Lord Drake, and it didn’t end well. It becomes clear that the botched investment is the reason for Lady Drake’s diminished financial state, but she assures Constance that the debt has been paid. However, Taylor blames Lady Drake for influencing her husband in certain decisions. Taylor is a traditionalist, and believes that women have no place in business (much less government). Constance determines that Lady Drake’s reluctance to speak stems from the pain she feels at the mention of her late husband.

Lady Drake agrees to speak to Rodia, Beckham, Hansen, and Monaghan to secure their votes. Constance agrees to look into the rest.

The crew holds a meeting, and Constance doles out the assignments:

* The Skovlanders (specifically Markus and Clermont) will be dispatched to work on Norgaard, and offer him a share in the shipping company.

* Gears will approach Sabine Lyness. Constance gives him a Coin to grease the wheels, and authorizes him to promise more, as long as it doesn’t get out of hand.

* Kamali will approach Wakim, and appeal to him as a fellow Iruvian.

* Constance will speak to Taylor herself.

Gather Info:

Constance goes to Dunslough, but at the Devil’s Tooth, the bartender says that Markus is currently at work. Constance decides that work is work, and you don’t interrupt a man while he’s working. Instead she goes to Charterhall and visits Clermont at his office in the Skovlan Consulate. She lays out the plan to get Lady Drake appointed to the Council, and asks him to speak to Lord Norgaard on her behalf, and offer him a stake in the shipping company in return. Clermont agrees to speak to Norgaard that afternoon.

Gears goes to City Hall to speak to Lady Sabine. Her office is adorned with several intricate clockwork mechanisms, and these immediately draw Gears’ attention. It turns out that Sabine is the granddaughter of Benedict Lyness, a famous inventor. The conversation ends up going very well, and Sabine agrees to vote for Lady Drake, but Gears gives away a little more about the business than he should when he mentions the Moon’s Daughter (Devil’s Bargain). It is hinted that Sabine is agreeable to Gears returning at a later date to take a closer look at her grandfather’s work.

Kamali visits Lord Wakim at his residence that night, a surprisingly humble townhouse in Silkshore, which is decorated quite traditionally. She gives him a letter “written” by Constance. It asks that he vote for Lady Drake, and in return Constance offers to eliminate an enemy of his choice. He’s impressed by the eloquence of the letter, and speculates that Constance was educated at an Iruvian school, which Kamali inwardly finds quite amusing. His primary concern regarding Lady Drake is her stance on social policy. He asks if Lady Drake would be open to working with him to help improve relations between their two cultures, and Kamali responds in the affirmative.

Wakim seems agreeable to the idea of voting for Lady Drake. However, he is unwilling to accept Constance’s offer of a blatantly illegal act, as he believes that justice is the province of the courts and the council, not of the streets. Kamali indicates the city around them, and he responds that he knows all too well the way of things, and thus is not offended by the offer itself. However, he insists that if he were to lower himself to such level, he would lose all hope of maintaining the proper rule of law. She is taken by surprise, as he seems to genuinely believe what he’s saying, and may possibly be the most idealistic person she’s ever met. She speculates that if her father had been like him, her life would have turned out quite differently.

Kamali takes the letter back and writes at the bottom another passage from the Book of Light: “Let he who has been given a crown and permitted to rule in the world of men dispense justice with my wisdom.” In light of this, Wakim acknowledges that even the courts are fallible, and justice may occasionally require outside assistance. If there were (for example) someone who had faced the courts for some heinous crime but was freed on a technicality, then perhaps Constance and her crew could provide a service in the name of justice after all.

Notes:

It’s become apparent that all of Kamali’s problems stem from how she relates to older men.

Also, Doskvol is not a democracy. The City Council appoints new members themselves (one for each neighborhood), but they are ostensibly answerable to the Lord Governor, who is ostensibly answerable to the Immortal Emperor. However, everyone is usually quite happy to take a fairly hands off approach, so long as the taxes roll on regularly.

More background on Iruvian history and the Book of Light to come.

A real one, not our normal smash and grab. We end up going to war again though, so we haven’t quite lost our sub-breaker ways.

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 46 (December 21 2016)

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 46 (December 21 2016)

The Porcelain Dolls: Session 46 (December 21 2016)

Aftermath of the Two-Stroke Folk Bloke Stoke & Choke:

Payout: 0

Heat: 4 (2 for standard exposure, +2 for killing)

Entanglement: Questioning. The Bluecoats scoop up Keel & Drav to grill them about the goings on at the boxing club. Constance decides that she doesn’t want undue attention, so she sends Gloves down to the station with 2 Coin to grease the wheels, and clear up any unfortunate misunderstandings.

Rep: 0 at first. The Grinders were Tier 2, but the Dolls were keeping this quiet, so no one knows it was them. Having no profit, Constance wasn’t going to mention it at all to the Crows, but recent interactions with the Bluecoats have come to Lyssa’s attention. Constance goes to speak with her, and the subject of the Grinders eventually comes up. This earns the Dolls 2 Rep, which is enough to bring them to Tier 2 (and they have 8 Coin earmarked for this in the vault). Lyssa ups the tithe to 2 Coin per job, acknowledging the crew’s upgrade.

Downtime:

Constance reduces Stress (clearing 1), and reduces Heat (twice, clearing all 4, paying 1 Coin).

Kamali reduces Stress (twice, clearing 3).

Gears works on the project to mount the cannon on the cart (bringing it to 7 of 8), and trains Prowess.

Shade works on a project to upgrade Quellyn to neutral (filling in 3 of 6), and a project to upgrade the lair’s security to (filling in 2 of 8). He spends a Coin to reduce Stress, ends up overindulging, and is Lost. He learns from Setarra that she has dealt with her Spirit Warden problem.

The boxing club and the Moon’s Daughter generate a total of 8 Coin.

The factory is now open for business (3 of 4 assembly lines running on the main floor). The construction project in the basement is progressing as well, and Constance donates 1 Coin to help speed that along (bringing it to 2 of 8).

A message for Valeris Lamond is delivered to the Bucket from Clermont. The groundwork has been laid for the Skovlan shipping company, and the time is right for the fundraising to begin (there’s a clock on my side for this one).

A glance at the morning paper reveals reports of the incidents in Barrowcleft and Silkshore, but no mention of Wulfric or his symbol. However, when Constance heads down to Dunslough to check on the refugees, she hears the name spoken in hushed whispers. She finds Markus at the Broken Anchor, where he is extremely happy with the outcome. She gets the idea to have one of his people try and seduce Ellsworth’s wife.

The paper also mentions that Ellsworth Dunne is missing. As such, the City Council is down three members, and so a state of emergency is declared, and will be convening to appoint new councilors. Constance goes to see Lady Drake, and encourages her to put forth her name for consideration. Out of the 9 remaining councilors, 4 are considered to be generally favorable toward Lady Drake, 4 are considered unfavorable (for various reasons), and 1 is unknown. Lady Drake will persuade Councilor Ettore Rodia to sponsor her nomination, and Constance will work on persuading enough of the rest of them to ensure that the appointment goes the right way.

Notes:

We see the Dolls go up to Tier 2, and immediately set about making their mark on local politics. This should be interesting.

Ok, character goal update & questions:

* The spider is now a vampire, hurray!

1. John Harper, what’s up with the vampire XP triggers? “display your dominance or.”? is that a mistake?

* The slide want to make Bazo’s spirit into a hull. Reviling he is a ghost made old grudges resurface. Good for him (trying to go head to head with the reconciled will be interesting) Also, he is no longer in jail or in the spirit warden captivity. Things are about to get even more stupid insane then usual

2. What did you use in your games as the secret to the reconciled unmadness? I’m thinking human sacrifice, dark god blessing andor (un)MAD SCIENCE, but I’m open to suggestions.

3. Can someone link me to one of the good old hull discussions? I’m not sure how to go about it beyond the general “make a long term project that lead to a score”

*The whisper starts to write pro-souls and anti-church propaganda pamphlets as a vice. I can’t wait for an overindulgence…

*The leech found a goal in his life. he want to create mind-controlled leviathan-blood-corrupted- mutant- super-soldiers. Have I mentioned he was kicked out of medical studies for failing the ethical comity? he was the first student to do so for non-political reasons in the last hundred years or so. Also, his lab rat multiply by dividing in half, and just might start a plague if released.

I love Wednesday nights.

Time to pay up Kinclaith

Time to pay up Kinclaith

First a bit of game statistics nerding. I payed 92 games this year, up from my average of 78. And a few other observations.

Then, the story of the Spectral Society bullying the Kinclaith family into paying long overdue “donations” to Charterhall University. Roathe was itching for a duel, Irimina was at some points lucid and cunning, at others in a rapture, but the Blades did it… with the catch that they’d have a statue erected in their name.
