After about a 2 month hiatus, my Blades group is finally going to resume next week! The Holiday Season always messes up my gaming schedule đ
I tend to struggle to engage the players after they’ve been away for so long. Does anyone have any hot tips for getting the action rolling? My first instinct is to just jump right back into it, but inevitably there’s gonna be dozens of questions about “what happened with this?” or “who’s that guy again?” or the worst one “why are we doing this?”
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I know itâs more of an Apocalypse World thing, but have you looked into Love Letters? It could be a good way to a.) remind them of important plot points, b.) get them invested and rolling, and c.) jump forward a bit in time/plot.

Those are just some links to read up on the idea in case you donât own AW. Sorry for the spam.
I only run once a month. To help I have a newspaper that I did in powerpoint with refresher stuff and new missions ideas. It gets things rolling. đ
I’ve taken to writing a Gazeeter which outlines the whos, the wheres and the whats. Players can access it from their phones so that they can remember people, places and things
Thanks for the ideas! I tend to do the newspaper thing for rumours and plot hooks. I do like the idea of the Love Letter, though. I might run with it.
The gang barely escaped their last session after getting into a bloody brawl with some angry Dockers, so I could pick up after they lay low for a bit to recover. Let the rolls determine how well they recover vs how deep the shit has got in their absence.
Heyas! What crew are they, what roles?
John Scott love letters are the way forward! Trust me. Do a mini time skip since you last played, have a letter saying what they were probably up to (or ask the players before you write the letter what they’ve been doing) and have them roll for a positive, mixed, or negative outcome from that. Then ask them a probing question to get them thinking. Works a charm!
Here’s an example from one of my groups: docs.google.com – Alexander Love Letter
We left it mid-score and couldn’t re-meet for a couple of months.
R Cautela We’ve got Hix the Cutter, Virgil the Leech, Cross the Whisper, and Song the Lurk. Combined they are the North Port Revenant, a gang of Hawkers that spends more time trying to wreak chaos upon Duskwall than selling drugs.
John Scott why all the chaos-mongering?
R Cautela The gang’s default response when things go wrong is to either blow it up or set it on fire. Hell, they’re currently building up resources to knock down the Crow’s Nest, and the only real provocation was one of their street level dealers was recruited by the Crows. Their reputation is Ruthless, but pretty soon I’m going to suggest they add Insane.
