  1. This looks awesome, I hope I can try it out soon! I’ve got a question though – it looks like you make heavy use of Native American/First People and some Asian immigrant tropes in the setting. Have you reached out to any members of those communities for input on appropriate ways to represent their cultures?

  2. NotSoSpeedRuns Thanks for your interest.

About your question: I don’t see my game as “heavy use” of Native American/First People & Asian tropes. It’s a fantasy setting with gunslingers and demons and impending doom. It, too, has native habitants and immigrants not only from far east but south and europe, too. Let’s not forget women, homosexuals and children, who had a hard time in the west, too. The gaming group decides what they want to see and what they want to avoid in the game. I hope to receive feedback from those gaming groups if something of my writing is not respectful or inappropriate. Living in Germany means that I don’t have access to representants of Native American or asian interest groups. Are you a member of one of this groups?

To make that clear I included that paragraph in my text:

“A Fistful of Darkness is a Weird West Fantasy setting with heavy emphasis on the fantasy part. It’s not intended to be an accurate history lesson or a simulation of past times. It is designed to be a cinematic game which lets you play all those wild / weird west tropes towards the end of the world. Historical accuracy is no goal at all. The Old West was a time of colonialism, racism, misogyny, and wanton cruelty which may be part of your game, but don’t have to. This game is about fun at your table, so please make sure that everybody is feeling comfortable about those topics and how they are presented in the game. If you’re in doubt, discuss them up front and every time it is needed with your players. As an example: Any character, male or female, can play every playbook. But if you have a female player who wants to make misogyny a central part of her PC’s persona, talk about it, then do it.”

  3. Your hack is exquisite. I’ve been seeing it grow from v0.1 to this gorgeous doc, and I’m stumped. I’ve only read a few pieces here and there, can’t wait to read through it all !

  4. Stefan Struck Thank you for your response! I appreciate your honesty and I think that’s a good way to to think about dealing with such themes in RPGs in general. If this is to be a fully published module, though, I would still recommend at asking someone for some input. I’m not personally a member of one of these groups, but I had to take in similar considerations for another game I was homebrewing a while back (though it ended up on the eternal backburner). If you are interested in getting some input from someone more qualified than me, I recommend looking into https://atribecalledgeek.com or Dr. Darcie Little Badger (a supernatural author and RPG player with indigenous background) at https://twitter.com/ShiningComic. Regardless of what you choose to do, I look forward to trying it out in the future!

  5. NotSoSpeedRuns Thanks a lot for the input! I’m not sure if there will be a serious publish of this hack because it started as a fun project and it evolves more and more into some kind of strain while I try to make everybody happy.

Good to know the mentioned sources, though, just in case it will get more serious in the end. I’ll have a look at them.

  6. Still working on those roll20 sheets. Learning curve is much steeper than expected because I’m not good (yet) at html + css + pug + scss. Having a lot of help from Jacob and I won’t give up. Hope to have something useable in a few weeks.
