Hey Scum and Villainy peoples’, I got a question for ya.

The pilot ability Keen Eye reads: You have sharp eyes and notice small details many might overlook. Gain +1d when firing ship guns or making trick shots.

Can anyone explain to me what a trick shot is?

Are we just saying a tricky(difficult) shot? Perhaps something from long range?

I would also think bouncing a shot off something but as most guns in the game are explicitly some sort of plasma I don’t imagine they could bounce off walls/etc. like regular ballistics.

Do I just hope the enemy is standing underneath a chandelier?

Any examples would be greatly appreciated.

  1. It’s canon in at least some universes that plasma bolts will bounce off ray shielded surfaces that have been sufficiently reinforced. And blade shaped plasma torches that some might envision as swords. 😉

  2. Also: you don’t “hope” the enemy is standing under a chandelier. If it’s plausible that they might be standing under a chandelier you narrate the situation you want to the GM.

A failed roll might mean they weren’t under the chandelier after all, or might mean you missed, or that without the chandelier you’re now in darkness or set the place on fire or whatever.

It might seem presumptuous to narrate things like that rather than waiting for the GM to narrate something that you can use – but usually it’s a good thing, and takes some work off the GMs shoulders, as they don’t need to remember to narrate details that can be used for trick shots.

  3. Other trick shots might include:

    – shooting past their ear to intimidate someone into sitting down and listening to you.

    – shooting a weapon from their hand

    – shooting a key component off an escaping shuttle

    – shooting the control panel to open a door or disable it so the bad guys can’t follow.

    – combining a shot with some other action, such as shooting while sliding under a closing blast door, or throwing knives while cooking, or flying through a dense asteroid field and “trick shot” shooting a path as you go.

And, of course, firing a missile down the tiny exposed vent in the Death Star and responding to a bounty hunter by quick drawing under the table and shooting first.

  4. A lot of these ideas are really cool. Yeah, any sort of shot where the gunplay isn’t normal – shooting a knife out of the air that was being thrown at someone, firing at a button to open a door, or to deceive, like to sell the idea of shooting at someone without actually hitting them are all what I’d consider ‘trick shots’.

  5. Stras Acimovic Glad to hear that! I’m actually an imposter who’s never read Scum & Villainy, and just making up answers based on how I run my own games. But if I ended up giving the right answer, I’ll take the win!

(I knew it’d be worthwhile putting points into SWAY)
