When looking at the 1.7 version of Scum & Villainy (which now includes Blades SRD content to flesh out the mechanics), I was surprised to not find a reprint of the incarceration mechanics along with any tweaks needed for S&V (since S&V doesn’t use claims).
Stras Acimovic was the incarceration roll deliberately removed for S&V and if so, is there any guidance on what the consequences for arrest are in the Procyon sector?
(Chiming in, I hope that’s cool.) Incarceration was something we considered adding to the game but in the end, we felt like long-term incarceration wasn’t something that felt appropriate for the tone of the game. Instead, if a crew member (or the entire crew) does go to the clink, you’re much more likely to have a fun job where you break out of prison than for someone to serve hard time. Does that help clear things up?
One of the things I like about Blades is that Incarceration is a thing that happens, but generally it ISN’T actually for very long. You go in, have a possibly bad experience and then you are back within a job or two. It’s a real revolving door justice system at lower wanted levels. So it’s a setback, but doesn’t feel out of line with other entanglements, especially since the arrest can be of someone related to the crew rather than a core PC. I thought it strange that S&V still has the “Arrest” entanglement, but not the revolving door prison system.
I guess it isn’t strictly necessary since lay low can reduce wanted level in S&V while Incarceration is the only way to reduce wanted level in the base BitD. But it’s surprising enough that I was curious whether it was an oversight or a deliberate design choice.
If you watch any of the source material you’ll find many episodes where people are arrested (leia, spike spiegel/faye, jayne+river+simon, the whole crew of the moya in farscape, the entire middle sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy 1) but you won’t find any episodes where they “do hard time”. It’s not at all appropriate for the genre.
If for whatever reason this is near and dear to your heart, feel free to hack the game (the rules are not super hard to port), but its not a good fit for the core setting imo.
