So I’m a bit new to the group…I learned about the game after the kickstarter period was over.

So I’m a bit new to the group…I learned about the game after the kickstarter period was over. Is there any way to get some of the additional kickstarter material outside of selling a kidney on the black market?! Band of Blades and Leviathan Song sound great, as does Blades against Darkness.

  1. The additional KS material (hacks of the core rules) are going to be released, some have already but you are never going to get the KS exclusive material short of buying the hard copy book from someone that was a backer.

  2. As Nigel Clarke has said, “Band of Blades”, “Leviathan Song” and “Blades against Darkness”, plus all the other unlocked hacks will be sold regularly once they are finished. I believe the only KS exclusive items you will be unable to purchase are the source files and the U’Duasha City Guide chapter from the Special Edition book.

As someone who is in the fortunate position of being a backer who received both, I don’t see why these couldn’t now be made available for sale to anyone interested. Could be that plans to sell the source files are in place once the SRD is released, but so far I’ve not heard anything… And it wouldn’t be hard to release the U’Duasha setting as a PDF. I mean, money is money, so why not drop the exclusivity and sell them?

  3. +Matt Kay, I’m not a backer of Blades but I am a backer of other KS’s. Exclusives should remain exclusives for backers – it’s part of the social contract between the creator and the backer and an additional thank you that many backers look forward to.

Personally, I don’t care – when I back, the exclusives aren’t what get me in: it’s the idea, the stretch goals and the reduced pricing. But there are backers who enjoy the exclusives and it wouldn’t be right to change the expectations after the fact.

  4. Sure, I’m a Superbacker on KS so I’m aware of how exclusives work. I also agree with your own feelings on exclusives.

That said, I think the Limited Edition physical book is the only thing here that should remain exclusive. Releasing the source files makes sense alongside the SRD, to ensure we all get high quality additional material, and I can’t see why the U’Duasha setting should remain in the hands of a privileged few. I paid extra for a beautiful book and the source files, but don’t care if others get access, too.

Of course this is my personal opinion, and there are (as you’ve suggested) probably plenty of other Limited Edition backers who feel otherwise.

  5. I was just curious if they’d be available to others at some point. I’m fine either way..I think it’s nice to have some rewards exclusive to backers, yet I can understand how that can be hard from a publishing standpoint. You have to balance reward vs getting your product to as many people as people as possible, so I get the dilemma!

  6. If more people have access to more setting material, I feel like that will mean that more people will get interested in it, which really benefits all of us. (I’m an LE backer too).

  7. David Canny everything I’m on to do should be out for you at some point.

The Spider is in the core book. Scum & Villainy is on DriveThru (there might be some news there shortly) and Band of Blades will be up in a similar fashion (it’ll go up as a in-progress, you need the core blades game to play to start) but get expanded till it’s standalone someday. I assume unless something terrible happens, Throne of the Void will follow the same format.

John’s encouraged creators to figure out how/why they want to distribute their stuff, so I can’t speak definitively for everyone, but I know Sean has stuff up on his page (http://www.seannittner.com/blades-in-the-dark/), I know Dylan has the B.A.D playset up for testing, and most folks I’ve talked to have at least thought about distribution in one fashion or another.

So keep your eyes peeled. Not everything is in motion (there’s a ton of work to make one of these as I can attest) but there should be ways for folks to get most of the extra content as it comes out.
