Hi All

Hi All

Hi All,

Looking for players to start a new weekly Blades In The Dark campaign via Roll20.

The campaign will be running on UK time. Day of the week is flexible but my likely preference is Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7-11pm (ish).

This should be enough time for at least one score and downtime each session.

I’m looking to play in the default Doskvol setting but really looking forward to exploring the fiction with players and seeing where the journey takes us. Hoping for plenty of player interaction to build the world. Style of game will be more theatre of the mind rather than drawn maps of locations (unless the score requires it of course).

This is my first time GM’ing this style of RPG, but I’m sure we can discover an awesome story together and after a few sessions I will have worked out most of the wrinkles.

Drop me a message if you would like to play. First session will likely be to set up characters and crew background perhaps with a short heist depending on time. After that we can progress to the campaign proper. Date of the first session will be determined dependant on how long it takes to gather players who can commit to regular play.

Looking for 3 players ideally.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Rob

  1. I’m down. I’ve ran a lot of Blades and am looking for opportunities to actually play it, and UK time is great for me.

Oh, and… Partially because of my time spent with the game, I’m really interested in exploring weird, unconventional character or crew builds. I’m an in-fiction player first, but part of the excitement about the game for me nowadays is having the mechanics of the game do strange and wonderful things, not just the fiction.

At worst, this will mean that you will sometimes have to make calls on fringe cases, and the game will sometimes be punctuated by short mechanics discussions. At best, this’ll mean that we’ll all get to see some really oddball, unique stuff happening.

Would you be happy to see this sort of thing in your game?

  2. Hi Daumantas,

Sounds like you have a lot more experience with the game than myself. If you are happy to play with a less experienced GM then I have no problems at all.

I will just say that whilst I’m happy to explore the weird and unconventional, I would rather start the game in a more “traditional” state and let the character backgrounds and aspirations drive the fiction towards the craziness and let it develop for all players to be involved in.

what kind of things did you have in mind? You have definitely got me intrigued!

  3. I’d be keen to join a game if you wouldn’t mind putting up with a relative newbie to the system. I’ve got a fair bit of experience of roleplaying in general under my belt, though, and I’ve been binge-watching John Harper’s Bloodletters campaign lately, so I won’t be entirely helpless.

  4. I’d definitely like to work with the rest of the group to make sure my antics enhance everyone’s experience rather than detract from it – building relationships with other characters from the get go and actively looking for opportunities for other characters to shine. A lot of Blades is making judgement calls about how things work in this world, so I will respect your decisions on that. Otherwise, I’m happy to work as a quicker book lookup if you need it. 😀

As for what I have in mind… My actual character choice will depend on what other players are interested in, but I’m very likely to make a character with an unconventional ability set (like a Cutter with Tempest), or one of the ‘advanced’ playbooks (like a Ghost or a Hull), or a reasonably balanced playbook outside of the base game (like Johnstone’s ghoulish Rakshasa*), or base playbook with an ability from a weird source (a Lurk with a Hull’s Compartments move).

Far as I can tell, none of these things are more capable than anything in the base book. I just like them because making weird ability combinations makes my brain tingle.

Whatever character I end up playing, as a player I’m also very likely to push for more Claims and favour going for big, risky targets. That’d give a lot of opportunities for trouble to brew, but is less good for calmly scoping out all the options the game has to offer.

  5. Here’s where I un-sell myself. I’ve got the game but never played it. My schedule is loopy and irregular. However, if you have such a thing as a reserve list, I’d like to be on it. Willing to take any role, even if it’s just for a one session guest spot.

  6. James Maroulis Newbies definitely welcome. I have only played a oneshot of Blades myself, but have loved reading the book and watched the same lets plays as you! The lets plays definitely primed me quite well before I read the book so you will be ok. The system is quite intuitive once you have made a few rolls.

Daumantas Lipskis Haha, an additional book lookeruppper is always handy!

Veteran skills from other playbooks are definitely OK to use. My preference would be to not start with ghosts or ghouls but I don’t want to seem too restrictive (nothing to prevent a player becoming one over time of course!).

Having things like Hull compartments in an organic character is easy to put in the fiction, with the use of say, a hollow prosthetic leg or something along those lines. Tempest for a cutter is also fine – but a cutter without a Whispers Iron will might get a little freaked out by all of the unwanted attraction a large energy discharge in the ghost field might attract……

  7. SO, so far I have Allan Maylett, James Maroulis and Daumantas Lipskis showing interest here on G+. I have one other player who responded to my listing on Roll20 ( link below).

Three PC’s was my preference, but 4 could be doable. How are you guys with the Tuesday night time slot as an ongoing thing? If we can get everyone organised we could start with introductions, character creation and crew creation next Tuesday 24th.

  8. Robert Bridgens I’ll probably only be able to throw together a rather crap microphone and might have to vanish a tad earlier than usual for the 24th, but after that Tuesday evenings would be ideal.

  9. Ah, Tuesdays are the only the day of the week I have where I know I always have them free. Id prefer to keep it to Tuesday if we can. Thursdays are a possible, but like your Tuesdays, they tend to be when I’m most often invited out by friends so won’t be as reliable.
