I’m looking for ideas for a random arcane treasure that a player snatched from Lord Scurlock’s vault. Any ideas?

  1. In my last session I had a book that was blank upon opening it, but would translate any statement of binary truth or falsehood into whatever made the statement true. Ex: “I’m not scared of you” would turn into “I’m terrified of you” if that was the truth of the situation. It was a way of bestowing the Like Looking Into A Mirror ability as a load item.

I also had clothing that my players believed could put things into or bring things out of the ghost field, which would’ve been neat.

It could be something that duplicates spirits (probably with potentially terrible side effects), so that new spirits aren’t needed as a fuel supply for rituals.

It could be something that can store a trauma, allowing a character to be free from one. The object probably needs some sort of upkeep or it gains a life of its own as a representation of that trauma, possibly coming back to haunt it’s progenitor worse than a regular ol’ trauma ever could.

  2. Its never random Tom Pleasant! Look to your Player’s Characters… What do they want? Is there a downtime action that the arcane treasure could link to? Is there a new special ability a character is hedging for that could use this treasure? More importantly is there a faction that wants it more than the PCs? Or a contact? Tie these elements together and create something ‘random’ that will draw the threads of your player’s characters into focus.

Or you could just draw from Andrew Shields Heist Deck!

  3. A broken mirror of vaguely sinister aspect, missing a single piece.

A book of a hundred pages, containing 99 traps and curses, and a single name.

A smoky bottle whose inhabitant promises your heart’s desire, if you but free it.

A wand that lights small candles. Handy!

  4. I was just thinking about a knife made from a shard of leviathan chitin, the handle wrapped with cured human skin (a small tattoo in evidence). Maybe the chitin is covered in runes-not carved, grown in place.

Perhaps this dagger has the power to kill a demon?

Maybe a set of runic brands. Their ritual use, over the entire surface of a person’s body would completely close them off from the ghost field. They could not be possessed, but could no longer compel ghosts except by ritual magic.

  5. A box containing vials of blood marked with the names of powerful individuals around the city. There’s also an empty one with the name of one of the crew on it.

  6. In my Cult games, i use some variation of this: Scurlock is plotting to get a specific set of souls for his ritual designed to give him leverage on Setarra.

So maybe.. it’s the soul of a famous Leviathan hunter, a piece required for his ritual. Strangford perhaps?

  7. A masculine silver circlet, heavily tarnished with black-red stains. The inner diameter has dozens of tiny needles – not for planting it in hair, but for embedding it into the scalp of its wearer. It carries an aura of imperious command.

It cannot be removed without scalping its wearer.

As long as it is worn, the wearer is incredibly attractive to everyone and -thing that sees them: men, women, demons, ghost echoes, etc.
