Not doing great at using the search function or maybe this is an obvious answer buuut…. Can NPC’s “assist?” I understand they can protect, participate in group rolls, or do a setup, but can they Assist in a roll? It feels like a silly question but they don’t take stress, and I can’t help but fall back on a group roll with them.

I know that NPCs can definitely help you out with your Vice rolls for +1d, so it kinda stands to reason they could help elsewhere. But I’m not certain.
For the same reason cohorts can’t lead a group action (they have no stress), I’ve always just assumed that they can’t assist, either. I don’t think there’s anything specific in the book either way.
Kelly Jolliffe If you’re willing to exchange Stress for life (like I think you’re allowed to do with Jail time), could be manageable. But that is a very good point.
Yes, but no, they cant assist the same way that pcs can. Pcs use their stress to cover the fictional costs, and cohorts cannot. Stress is a huge part of what separates you from NPCs.
That being said, if you lead them, you roll your command, and they roll their dice too to do the thing. As long as they are quality 1 or more, they are helping, and doing so for “free.” (As long as they don’t mess up, that is)
When NPCs “assist,” they shift your positioning and effect.
