  1. Wouldn’t the consequence depend on the exact situation?

    I could imagine a failed study directly annoying an NPC that you were studying (starting a clock for that NPC’s ire) or if you were studying an item in downtime, it could burn up one of your downtime actions but you could always try again.

    Or if it was to study a room during a job, you could keep track of them taking a long time on it meaning that their targets get further along in their own plans.

  2. Non-physical Harm is an option. Stuff like Tired, Drained, Distracted, etc. Reduced Effect is also a good one for this type of thing.

    Alternatively, if the roll isn’t dangerous (i.e. no obvious consequences of failure present themselves) then maybe it’s just a fortune roll instead of an action roll?

  3. As a first step, and this is something I keep trying to remind myself too, go back to the position and remember why you set it there. If it was Risky, what was the risk? That should be the consequence.
