#BladesAgainstDarkness

The Chosen is my answer to the cleric. And the monk. And the Paladin. They are someone who the gods have branded with their mark and made into an instrument of their will.Their god watches over them and has gifted them the power to be briefly, painfully, superhuman.

Alpha packet is coming along, it’s a lot more work than I thought it was going to be giving people what they need to actually run the game. The upside is it will be much more coherent when you try.

  1. This playbook looks pretty neat, and I really like the look of Disciple and Living Saint. Nephilim is also a cool ability, but it’s so similar to Live By the Sword that I worry it really steps on the widow maker’s toes. Strength, agility and endurance are not that different from speed, accuracy and power, so the only real difference in how the power is skinned. I wish there was a way to distance the two abilities from each other. I also worry about Lay On Hands making healing too easy. An action roll to heal harm? Since it’s not restricted to downtime, this becomes a source of infinite healing. Perhaps this hack is written in such a way that plentiful healing is no big deal, so maybe it’s not a problem.

Great work Dylan, I’m really excited to see this hack when it’s done.

  2. Mark Griffin Thanks again for the close read. I’ve really come to value your objective eye.

You might be interested to know that the language for Nelphim was actually ported over to the Widowmaker for Live by the Sword. The intent here is that the WM can do cool tricks with their weapon (ricocheting shots off of things, quick drawing, etc) while The Chosen can actually do superhuman feats (running on walls, lifting a boulder over their head, blocking swords with their hands, etc). I’ll try and tidy up the language to make that clear. Possibly re-introduce a roll for The Widowmaker so that there is chance for a mixed result, while The Chosen gets a somewhat blank check.

You make a good call on healing. Healing has recently undergone a revision as well so I’ll give that a tinker. I would note that the trigger on this is “open your body and soul as a circuit for divine power” and that any mixed result on that has concequences mundane healing doesn’t.

  3. I’m all for the two abilities being differentiated in some way, but I worry that Live by the Sword is going to be seen as a slightly worse Nephilim. That’s a shame because I thought it was a cool ability that really set the Widowmaker apart, and Nephilim is just one of a handful of unique and cool abilities possessed by the Chosen.

I’m all for weird divine consequences to your failed healing, but those can be resisted like anything else. And this class is built around the idea of being good at resist rolls because of favor. Granted, I have no idea how easy that is to generate, because only the GM and the player can decide on an appropriate sacrifice. It’s something to think about however, but only you know how healing should work in the game at this point.

  4. Adding to this, Eat Iron, Shit Nails is way, way similar to Acolyte of Pain. Given that the Widowmaker is a martial warrior-survivor and doesn’t have the power/fanaticism of a god backing their willingness to take pain, I would suggest that they give it up for another ability. They can always Veteran-advance for Acolyte if desired.

  5. Yeah, these playbooks have changed a bit since these days. You can rest assured that this redundancy has been resolved. Charles Simon Thanks for the feedback on these ancient posts, btw. I, quite literally, took my last exam today and polishing up the beta and getting it out to people is my new number one priority.

  6. Honoring you with a reply? Hell man, you’re the one looking over my work and providing feedback. I’m honored that you care to take the time to look through these ancient posts.

Your mountain looks amazing! You get the honor of providing my first piece of fan-art. 😉
