It will feature a gothic horror (Bloodborne/Ravenloft/Castlevania) theme and I hope to have it out in time for halloween!

How to Run Dungeons

So I’ve been synthesizing the feedback for Blades Against Darkness and trying to get a feel of what additional content I need to provide folks in the game. To that end here is my process for making jobs, doing engagement, and running dungeons. This hasn’t gone through layout, or much editing, but I figure that it will fill in some of the big questions that folks out there have.

In “Engagement” it mentions one critical change coming in the next version of the beta packet. That is, each Zone will have the faction’s defenses listed on the back. This is crucial for answering the question of what exactly are the players engaging. Here’s an updated version of The White Forest as an example:

I could use a little help with a one-shot of #BladesAgainstDarkness. Any have any good sample one-shot ideas? Here’s what I got so far, they need a lot of polish:

* The team is on a job to plant a relic in a tomb to unlock a rich find, but once they get there, they find a new cult worshiping the tomb as home of their god. What happens if they plant the relic?

* The team is sent to sabotage a new mining operation run by their patrons rival, but when they get there they discover that a patrons ally has already taken over the mine. The patron really needs that mine all to themselves. What now?

* Sneaking in with a shipment of supplies is a new arcane device highly prized by their patron. Half way back from picking up the shipment, they are attacked by a tribe of Ush’dvani. During the raid, the arcane device got swapped out with a fake. Who did this and why?

Since this is a once shot, I want a scenario that puts the players in the hot seat right at the very beginning. I also am trying to create a scenario where someone can’t just say “Let’s just go home.. let’s forget about this” And it sounds completely reasonable. My ideas aren’t great but they are all that I have so far. I need better ideas. Anyone else have anything?

Are there any updates on Blades Against Darkness? As far as I can tell, the last updates on here are from about a year ago. I’ve been looking for an alternative to Dungeon World for a PBTA fantasy-type game, so I’d really like to see this get released ^-^ #BladesAgainstDarkness

Here’s a peek at the Gothic Horror alternate setting The House of Usher. This will be part of a section that will demonstrate how to modify the game to fit it into different settings.

Current status of the project is that beta play-tests continue. For those of you who are familiar with the alpha there will have been many changes, but the largest one is better integration with the core mechanics of Blades.

Now each section of the dungeon has a Threat rating (an analogue to Tier) that drives the difficulty of jobs as well as the scope of the rewards. Successful jobs in a particular zone reduce its threat. Meanwhile Heat and Wanted have been replaced with Ire and Awakening.

Remember that bit in The Lord of the Rings about how the dwarves of Moria delved too greedily and too deep? Keep that in mind when you’re out on a job…

All of these concepts are in high flux right now and I don’t have a lot of bandwidth for testing at this point (I’m also a Electrical Engineering student and it’s coming up on the end of the semester) but I hope to have something playable for you all soon.
