Hi John Harper , as the quickstartrules seems to be nailed down, I wanted to ask whats going to happen next? Will there be close curtains while devellopement of the final books and other stretched goals progressing or will there be any new material for the crowd here to try? After many sessions with my own games, I started to think about new settings or more detailing material from the QS and so on. As many may do here.

So basicly I am just curious to know what comes next.

  1. Thanks for the question, Josephe.

I’ll continue to update the QS with bits and pieces as I work on the main book and my add-ons (Bluecoats, the Leech).

I’ll post some samples and teasers and artwork here from the main book. Also, anything brand new that I might want you all to try out.

So, it’ll be partially closed curtains. 🙂 If there’s anything specific that you want to see more of, I’ll probably accommodate you.

  2. I guess the only thing nice to see for me at this point would be another campaign starter maybe. As I am pretty sure the dimmersisters got robbed hundreds of times already, and the Reds crumbled already to dust 🙂 Its not something I am realy expecting to get from John directly, as the community already posted some nice Heist starters, or the many play reports. But maybe some people would like to have another perspective on the “official” setting.

  3. I’m curious, how far are we from a final edition? I’m gathering that 3 wasn’t the last test version? Personally, I’m curious about the Spider and other crews more than anything else. I also think that they will be more direct to play test than many other things might be…

  4. I do hope the final book is not too big. There’s an allergy among gamers I talk to where if they see a book beyond a certain page count they recoil and insist it is full of rules bloat and too much for a reasonable adult to invest time and energy in learning or bothering with. I think that was one of the strong points of the quickstart.

There’s a tension in the demand; of course people want to see more about Duskwall, but its initial presentation was “make it up yourself!” I wonder how the book will manage that line between giving enough background for structure and consistency, but not filling in so many of the blanks that the game fundamentally changes its nature from the quickstart’s skeleton to instead be a fleshed out setting.

I think that’s where it’s so helpful to have a slim book for players, and a thicker book that has more room to explore and get into things that the GM cares more about and can pick and choose between for a setting, while the players focus on what they know and what they can do.

  5. You’ll definitely see the other crews for testing. Stras is making the Spider, so I cant’t speak for him.

The book probably won’t be too big, but it will be a single volume. I’m not doing a multi-book set.

  6. hari capra I guess I feel there is a line between “too big for the player” and “too big for the GM.” They have very different needs.

In a single volume, you tread out a balance between those needs. =)

  7. I always like more than less in a book, personally. If there is a detailed section for the GM or setting, the player can ignore. And if it’s a pdf, who cares how big it is?

  8. Sorry, I could have been more clear. I wasn’t so much saying that I think it should be one way or another so much as I was describing what seems to me to be the idea behind it.

  9. hari capra True enough on the rules front. But players don’t need adventure generation tools, or full access to creatures and their inner workings, or adventure seeds, or balancing advice, etc. Those things take space and help GMs but aren’t something players need.

Also, if a campaign is focused, then the information for the GM might have more detail on areas the players don’t need to know about (but would if the campaign were set there.) If you’re in Crow’s Foot you don’t need to know the finer points of the docks.

  10. I erased a bit, seemed off point. You seemed to respond to it. I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying that it doesn’t seem like what’s happening. 🙂

  11. I am thrilled for the Stretched Goals. Has anyone a clue how long they will be? I guess somewhat between 8-16 pages each. Hopefully double as much in my opinion. Well lets wait and see.
