  1. The main twist with that, I think, is finding a way for the team to be pro-active and fit the ‘climb the ranks’ aspect of BitD core, or develop the procedural element if they’re reactive like most Sentai teams are (though I’ve only watched a small bit of Sentai)

  2. Making them proactive in my experience is tied to making the characters underdogs. If the premise has a status quo for them to tear down instead of protect you are halfway there.

  3. So, the more I think about this I’m starting to have some fledgling ideas from how I would go about making this hack work.

Setting would be a post war society where the aggressors won and have basically set about pillaging and exploiting their newly conquered territory. For flavor I would say that the aggressor’s tech is based around bio-engineering. This would give us the robots vs monsters thing you see in so many mecha/sentai shows (I’m looking at you MMPR and Pacific Rim). For additional factions, this would be other rebellion groups, neutral third parties, and factions within the aggressor’s occupying government.

Character types would be based on the stereotypical team roles. So you would have Science, Demolitions, Leadership, Mechanic, and Stealth (obviously these are off the cuff names)

Mecha: This would be another interchangeable aspect of the character sheet similar to how Character types work. Each Mecha would have a small list of upgrades and tricks you could learn and use as well as a scale. This would allow a variety of mechs from small armor to big honking robots, as well as give us a base line for when someone tries to deal with a big monster on foot.

Team Type: Like Crew, but this would also modify the mechs to a degree as well as show the infrastructure the team has in supporting their efforts. At least one team type would have to be Combiner, because the team work mechanics are screaming for one person to be On Point by piloting the combined robot while the rest of the team assists by working the systems.

Scores would become missions, where the Team works to undermine the aggressor while also rallying factions behind their take on rebellion and rebuilding.

  4. Heavy Gear is one of the cultural touchstones I have in mind for the mech aspect of it, but I also want to include the feel and scale of things like the mech’s from MMPR, Dai Gard, Voltron, Gundam, and even Gurren Lagan as well.

My current train of thought is the greater variety of player options, the more likely it can be to not have everything turn into violence as the only solution.

  5. Once you figure out how to have giant monsters as enemies, you could even have a crew type which lets the players be the guys from Attack on Titain. Small guys, working together to kill a giant monster.
