The Strangers – Actual play and my current strategy for running Blades one-shot adventures.

I ran Blades three times at Origins and had a blast. Instead of using my old score sheets though, I took some advice John Harper gave in his After Office Hours about running a two session game in one slot. The first to do character creation and set them up for the score. The second to play it out.

To make this work I had to make a few changes to character creation (skipping some things, focusing in on others).

Here’s my AP report along with the method I used for running the game: http://www.seannittner.com/actual-play-the-strangers-6172016/

Resharing here because John and I talk a lot about Blades. Good stuff!

*Narrative Control – Episode 83: What would John Harper do?”

Inspired by Alex Roberts and Marcelo Duarte Ferrari to start recording again, I got on the horn with John and we talked about how his gaming style affects his design and all the pieces of the venn diagram that make for a good times at the game table.

As Nathan Roberts reminded me, I’ve been remiss in posting actual play posts here.

Our scoundrels, a naive group of students at Charterhall University who call themselves the Doskvol Spectral Society, decided to push the Dimmer Sisters out their turf and claim the Cat and Candle for themselves. They did so by way of blackmail with threats of expulsion form the university! Such good stuff Karen Twelves Adrienne Mueller and Eric Fattig!

Extortion and blackmail are similar in concept, but there are differences between the two:

Extortion is a form of theft that occurs when an offender obtains money, property, or services from another person through coercion. To constitute coercion, the necessary act can be the threat of violence, destruction of property, or improper government action. Inaction of the testimony or the withholding of testimony in a legal action are also acts that constitute coercion.

Blackmail, in contrast to extortion, is when the offender threatens to reveal information about a victim or his family members that is potentially embarrassing, socially damaging, or incriminating unless a demand for money, property, or services is met.

Looking for a better name for the Charterhall University department that focuses on the philosophy, spectrology, and the humanities. Here are the current contenders. Love to hear what people think:

(Note Charterhall University is a merchant guild and partially city funded center of learning. As compared to the White Crown Academy which is an Ivy League school for the social and financial elite).

My first playtest is on air, we created characters and their crew. Waiting to see what trouble they get into next session.
