I saw this map and thought it would make an interesting basis for a Blade in the Dark city. Its got an isolated environment (untraversable rocks that cannot be mined or easily lived on, even if you could access it which is hard to do). The city is underwater (whether partially or completely which makes it both potentially hostile/harmful and not open to expansion, while providing some interesting new options for travel and heists.

I finally had the chance to watch the first 3 seasons of Peaky Blinders. (I won’t be spoiling anything significant, so you’re free to read this regardless of whether you’ve seen it or not.)

Season 1 is, for me, a near perfect example of a low tier Blades game. The interfaction fighting, the scheming, the things that were planned in flashbacks; it nailed it. And it’s a hugely enjoyable show to boot. I consider it almost mandatory viewing for someome wanting to get in to Blades.

Unfortunately, seasons 2 and even more so season 3 take huge steps forward in terms of tier and the show was both less enjoyable for me personally and felt less like Blades (though admittedly, I’ve only played low tier stuff so far).

Still, it has some great moments; trauma, infighting, loss and gain of turf, double agents, etc.

What did other people think? Again, try to keep it spoiler free for those who would like to see it fresh, but the comments section may contain spoilers, so if you’re worried, go watch the show first.

Quick question this time (hopefully):

What happens to unspent coin paid to PCs if they don’t spend it in the downtime after the score that earned it? Does it have to be converted to Stash if they don’t choose to carry it in to the next score? Or does it have to be stored with the crew’s Coin?

Who is where?

Who is where?

Who is where?

Is there a map or list anywhere for which gangs control/reside/operate in each of the districts (at the start of the game according to the book at least)?

I know each lists what properties they own and some have where they are (the three in Crow’s Foot for example), but it would be a really helpful reference sheet.

Our group is currently looking at possibly muscling in on the Nightmarket to increase turf around our lair, but I wasn’t sure canonically who would be there that we could take from.

I’m sure our GM already has ideas for us, I’m just trying to be proactive (and it’ll be helpful when I eventually start GMing).

Level 4 Harm

Level 4 Harm

Level 4 Harm

Just rereading the Harm rules and wanted to make sure I understand.

If you sustain level 4 harm, that’s fatal in all cases, right?

But if you suffer harm that rolls up to level 4 (because your level 3 harm box is already full), you might die, but equally, if the circumstances fit, you might instead be able to suffer a permanent physical disability of some kind. So it’s something akin to Trauma, but physical, like loss or limb, blindness, partial paralysis, need for a pacemaker, etc.

Is that basically it?

And once someone suffers level 4 and they aren’t killed off, I assume they’re removed from the scene in the same way as if they Trauma’d out, right?

(I guess theoretically, if you were unlucky enough to fill up all your level 1-3 harm boxes, you could hit level 4 with a level 1 harm, so having the option not to kill them outright is helpful there.)

Severos

Severos

Severos

I recently made my first character and, after toying with the idea of them being from the Dagger Isles, I eventually settled on Severos instead. I couldn’t find much in the book on the area or its people (from memory, about two paragraphs), so I made my own interpretation. I’ve decided that they are a trial people, with appearances similar to Maoris, extensive tattooing and all.

I know we have some very creative people in this community. What have your games decided about the Severosi and their wilds?

Just been reading the v8.1 setting descriptions for all the areas of Duskvol and it’s great.

Just been reading the v8.1 setting descriptions for all the areas of Duskvol and it’s great. Excellent work John Harper. Quick question for you though; is there any particular reason why Dunslough is the only district that doesn’t have a special effect? All the others do (e.g. +1d to acquire assets but with +2 Heat) and I really like the way it gives a mechanical effect to the area which changes the feel, but Dunslough has been missed/snubbed.

For everyone else, who runs Tangletown in your games, and how do they keep order since violence is not allwed there?

Are Lady Thorn (p288, leader of the Deathlands Scavengers) and Sister Thorn (p299, vice purveyor in the Deathland Scavengers) different people or is that a mistake? Or is it up to us to decide?

Custom setting: ideas for general locations

Custom setting: ideas for general locations

Hey all,

Thought I’d crowdsource some ideas. While I love the Duskvol setting and factions, my players have expressed an interest in creating our own. I know one of the strengths of Duskvol is the fact that space os restricted which forces conflict whenever anyone wants to expand and so I’d imagine that this is a fairly essential quality for Blades to work well (though I’m sure in hacks, people have ways around it).

So my question is basically, does anyone have any ideas about other essential elements for a good custom setting?

Secondly, does anyone have anyone have any good ideas for other settings that could be restrictive or isolated enough to work well in Blades?

Most recently I had the idea of a swamp-based setting. If only some of the ground is viable to build on, that would prevent expansion in to uncontested areas, including trying to build on top of existing land.

I’ve also thought about a subterranean, sinkhole setting with unscaleable walls, a frozen wasteland, an oasis in a desert, and the classic nuclear wasteland safespot.

Any other ideas gratefully received.
