I just offered the most cliche Devil’s Bargain, the one I never thought I’d actually get away with: one of my player’s characters just promised his soul to the Dimmer Sisters for their assistance in retrieving an Artifact of Kotar.

The funny thing is: The Archivists, a crew of knowledge keeping assassins, just learned the ancient technique of the Emberdeath, which another character has promised to use on the pledged upon his death to rob the Sisters of their prize!

I impressed myself the other night while describing a scene.

I impressed myself the other night while describing a scene. The character was searching for a way out of a root cellar while escaping Bluecoats, and suffered a major consequence. “Remember how there were two ghostly voices earlier, and you captured one spirit? Well as you run your hands along the walls frantically searching for some kind of exit, your hand brushes up against another hand. It suddenly grabs you by the wrist and pulls you into the darkness, the last thing your companion sees of you is your foot as it dissappears into the shadows.”

Stopped the table cold, and gave myself chills.

Game starts in 30 minutes and I have a question: Page 21 of the quick start; NPC Downtime. It says to advance the project clocks of the factions you’re interested it. By how much, and how many clocks? All clocks related to a faction advance one tick, or choose one per faction?

A question: the game informs me that it is best practice to not keep secrets from the players (for very long at least), but rather find excuses to reveal the plot points. Therefor, I feel that if there is some nefarious party working against the players it should be represented by a clock, and not simply sprung on the players. Clocks are put on the table for all to see, there is no such thing as a private or GM only clock to my knowledge. The title of a clock could be a spoiler (ex: “The Lost: Tracking you to your lair”).

I’m leaning towards using as vague a title as possible for my clocks, (ex: “The Lost: scouting in retaliation “) but the impression I’m getting is that I should fully explain up front what will  happen when a clock runs out. What is in the spirit of the game? For my players, what would you prefer?

First time BitD GM looking for 1 more player. Our first session is Monday the 27th, 8pm eastern US time. Our third PC can’t make the session so I’m lookin for a replacement, if and when he returns we’ll have a 4 person crew, plus me. We currently have a Lurk and a Cutter (and maybe a Hound). You will need to answer some background questions about your character this Saturday so I can know how to handle session 1.
