My PCs recently discovered that a vampiric member of the Duskwall Council has large groups of the unwilling smuggled into his manor house basement via private docks at night. Distant screams can be heard from deep inside. And barrels are later shipped out.

What do you think is going on in there? And why have it happen at the manner house in Whitecrown rather than in some secret location tucked away in the Nightmarket or Silkshore? Any ideas?

Hi, as I dont have time to put everything into my new character sheets myself, how about I upload the Photoshop sourcefile and everyone who has PS can help with the Sheets or do their own?

Here it is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/599qppdhcwedauj/Vandel_BitD_CSheet_hack_Whisper.psd?dl=0

Freefont version:

Fonts needed Minion Pro Regular and Birch Std Regular, which should be on each computer, I realised my title font is from my commercial Collection, so I will Change the Class Name into a Free Font to be editable.

Please reupload editable PSD of those sheets when you use them for hacking. Have Fun.

Are there any rules about reducing the crew’s wanted level?

Are there any rules about reducing the crew’s wanted level? My players misbehaved a good bit on their first few score, and are now trying to get that wanted level back down into the realm of reasonable.

Here’s a new draft of the game, just in time for people playing at GenCon. It’s an incomplete draft (missing stuff like the long example, and the GM pages), but it has all the current rules and playbooks.

It also has a little surprise on the final page. Some people have wondered how I’m doing examples or “moves” for the game, and you can finally see it. They’re called Instances. Each one is an example of how to apply the rules and are also a pre-built mechanic that you can use as-is, if you want. Some will be general, others very specific, even down to stuff like, “When you try to make a deal with Bazso Baz…”

Also, instances will be grouped by playset and setting. As you can see, the page says “In the Shadows of Duskwall” at the top. There will also be instances for the Bluecoats playset, the Leviathan Hunters playset, the demon city of U’Duasha, etc.

I have struggled with how Trauma, Vice, and Stress fit together.

I have struggled with how Trauma, Vice, and Stress fit together.

I have struggled with how Trauma, Vice, and Stress fit together. I’ve come up with a number of possible solutions, some more radical and complex than others, and discarded them one by one.

What’s my problem anyway? Here are some of my base assumptions that don’t fit with how these things work in the game as it is (and I don’t expect the game to change to fit my assumptions.)

* Vice is a threat to rogues, even as it comforts them. It is not an unmitigated good. You can get lost in it, brittle and destroyed.

* There are ways to clear stress that are not vices, and sometimes vice can add stress (by which I mean damage, system strain, and pushed luck.)

* I disagree that the more damaged you are, the easier it is for you to relax and clear stress; the more damaged you are, the more helpful vices are to you.

I have FINALLY come up with the rough draft of what I think is a workable alternative. As I continue working on my own hack of Blades in the Dark, this is the foundation of what I think will be a better fit for me.

DISCLAIMER: I don’t need you to love it! I don’t hate Blades in the Dark because we disagree about these issues! All is well. I’m experimenting. If you have useful comments I’d love to hear them, and clarifying questions are great. No abuse please.

The dead are pushing on the living! A supernatural threat arises as corpses are possessed by ghosts under orders from a nefarious will, targeting the Crows and their illegal operations.

The question is not who the Crows can turn to for help. The question is what the Crows will do to defend their territory and take the fight to the aggressors in shadow. That’s where you come in.

I will develop the heist on the spot based on the decisions the group makes about how they want to do business! Watch this space, I’ll provide prefab characters well in advance of the game.

Thank you for signing up! I look forward to our game.

Lots of improvisation means lots of NPCs coming and going in the game.

Lots of improvisation means lots of NPCs coming and going in the game. How do you keep track of that over multiple sessions in YOUR game?

I was using a Word document, but re-uploading it was onerous. I converted to a Google doc so I could share more easily.

How do you do it for your games? (And if you say “I just remember it all” then break into a maniacal laugh I will pointedly ignore you.)

The Devilfish Platter!

The Devilfish Platter!

The Devilfish Platter! A luxury feast indeed, in the shadowed city of Duskwall. In the game last night, one of the characters had bad news to deliver to violent people, so he prefaced his news with a devilfish platter to soften the blow.

https://fictivefantasies.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/blades-in-the-dark-a-night-at-the-theater/

The head sac of the devilfish (octopus) was about the size of a human head, with tentacles about six feet long. The head was cut open and stuffed with succulent prawns. The devilfish skin had a light garlic glaze with herbs pressed against the flesh to form pleasing and tasty patterns. The removed beak was replaced by a bowl of crab cheese; not actually cheese, but yellow-orange, and spreadable, and salty/tangy.

The tentacles were neatly arrayed on the heavy tray, and in their “clutches” were rows of topbread (mushroom caps, toasted, a bread-like texture) and long-shrimp and crawdads.

There was enough for the crew and their gangs! From the chewy fun of the suckers to the smooth richness of the crab cheese, there was a lot to love on this gourmet dish. Maybe your crew deserves one too.
