So, coming back to Folded Steel my thoughts have turned to tier and how it works. In Blades it makes sense that your crew had a tier, it is a game about moving up the criminal ladder and expanding your operations accordingly. For Folded Steel Scum and Villainy will be more of a touchstone where Tier still exists, but it is used to gauge outside factions and the quality of their assets. It is not thematically appropriate to have Enclaves being that concerned with going up in tier (well mostly not appropriate, so I reserve my right to come back to this later)

Where tier, or some version of it rather, does have a place in Folded Steel is in regards to the mechs. Specifically, tier would be a good mechanic to look to to model the different size scales of mechs and how they interact with each other.

Tier 0 Booster Suits – Human scale exo suits

Tier 1 Frames – 15 feet tall

Tier 2 Walkers – 30 feet tall

Tier 3 Goliaths – 60 feet tall

Tier 4 Titans – 120+ feet tall

The higher the tier the more effect the mech provides, but also the more it interacts with the Enclaves resources. During the First Fold it costs more funding to run a tier 1 than a tier 0, and also provides more exposure. During the Second Fold the empire definitely notices and reacts accordingly when an Enclave manages to field a Tier 3 mech.

What this does in addition to providing a loop of gathering resources is create meaningful choices for the players when deploying on a mission. The Enclave’s current position will have to factor into the choices instead of just always bringing the biggest and heaviest mechs in their hangar.

Folded Steel thoughts of the morning is the idea of “Folds”, how they relate to Enclaves, and what the currently planned playbooks are.

Before I talk about Enclaves I need to establish the idea of “Folds.” Folded Steel is in some series ways shaped by my young love of Robotech just as much as it is by more modern Mecha media. In particular this can be seen with Folds, which are explicit different ages to play in that are meant to emulate certain subgenres while also allowing the Enclave to progess through time in a more clear way that my original idea of tiered Crew Playbooks did when this first came up. Each Fold features a specific thematic things the Enclaves are trying to manage.

The First Fold is Pre-Invasion – This looks like near future sci-fi with a hint of things to come. Mechs and energy weapons are new technologies in their infancy enabled by the discovery of a strange new energy field. Enclaves are less unified, but tend to be worried about securing Funding and managing Exposure.

The Second Fold is Occupation – An outside force drawn by the use of the mysterious energy have come to our dimension to occupied the earth. Mechs now represent mankind’s best hope of throwing off the yoke of these oppressors. Enclaves are about rebellion, and having to manage the Heat from the Empire as well as the Resources needed to keep their particular brand of revolution going.

The Third Fold is Reconstruction – The Empire has been defeated but reality itself is in ruins, but there is still a future. Enclaves are defined by their particular vision for recovery, and must nurture Hope while also finding the Scraps that they need to keep moving forward.

If you so desire you can play through from Pre-Invasion all the way to the reconstruction, chronicling how your Enclave has changed with the Folds, or you can instead just tell the story of one Fold and the tragedy or triumph it brings. Each Fold will have three Enclaves specific to it, and mechanics on how you can call back to the previous Fold and be shaped by the time before.

No matter which Fold you are in the brave people willing to wrap themselves in a mech remain the same. Current planned pilot playbooks (names are subject to change):

Ace – a natural pilot who excels in his mech in ways that others cannot.

Tech -scientists, communications experts, and mechanics

Commander – tactical commander able to get others to do what is needed.

Specialist – Combat specialist who is as deadly in their mech as out.

Psychic – People changed by the energy field capable of strange feats.

Folded Steel thought of the morning is based around character sheets. Current vision is a character sheet with a section that covered your out of mech options that is intended to be covered by the equivalent of your current mech’s sheet when you are suited up. The Enclave (crew equivalent) could even have a Hangar section intended to hold the Mech sheets not in use. Leaning toward an index card size mech sheet, but am not sure if that is big enough.

Hi all-

Hi all-

Hi all-

I just wanted to let you all know that I have a new Forged in the Dark hack that is an add on / tier reward for the Dog Days comic Kickstart campaign (only 4 days left!). Dog Days is a noir crime / cult mystery in an alternate reality. Its about anthropomorphic animals embroiled in very human stories, with an epic twist (that I won’t spoil).

-Dog Days the Roleplaying Game-

Create your own stories in the world of Dog Days. Play a pack of adventurous characters as they uncover dark secrets in an alternate reality. Pound the pavement as a bull and drop the arm on the crook that left the floater in the river. Stalk the shadows as a vigilante out to settle a score. Or play a stir-wise villain with a sinister plan to get the hook on that flossy politician. Whatever you choose to do, it is time to show the city who is top dog. Dog Days the RPG uses the Forged in the Dark system.

Hi all – I’ll be releasing the first full draft (beta) of my heroic fantasy hack soon.

Hi all – I’ll be releasing the first full draft (beta) of my heroic fantasy hack soon. I’d like to be able to include interesting magical artifacts. If you are bored, suggest a few! Also let me know how you want me to credit you in the book.

I’ll assume that all weapons are “fine” quality.

To get you started:

Beads of Terror: These bone beads can be woven into an individual’s hair or beard. When activated, they emit a fearsome swirling smoke with fleeting images of sinister creatures. You have potency on actions to intimidate. Once per session you can use Bash or Command to cause an opponent to either flee or freeze in terror.

Glaive of the Reaver: The haft of this glaive is intricately carved. Once per session, the bearer can leap from ranged distance to melee distance and attack a gang of opponents on equal footing.

Hi all — I’m getting ready for the first full release of my heroic fantasy hack.

Hi all — I’m getting ready for the first full release of my heroic fantasy hack. I have a couple of questions for the group. I’ll ask them in two different posts.

1. The name had tentatively been called Blades in the Brokenlands. It doesn’t fit anymore. I need a new name…Let’s crowdsource it!

The setting will originally have one defined continent with city states and maybe one other “nation.” Other nations will be included, but their homelands are not on the continent. The continent does have a large magical “scarred land” with an ancient (and fading) mystical barrier. The long-gone ancient civilization is VERY loosely inspired by King Solomon and the current city states are very loosely based on early Mesopotamian civilizations (sumer / babylonian).

I’m looking at running Band of Blades this week.

I’m looking at running Band of Blades this week. We’re very familiar with Blades and I’ve had a quick read-through of the 2 books. I think it’s gonna take a session or 2 to get to grips with this one regardless.

I know there’s rumour of an update coming soon so I’m wondering if it’s worth printing it all out now and starting a new game, or should I wait a bit?

*Glitch in the System: a Trapped in a Video Game Hack – Challenge Types*

*Glitch in the System: a Trapped in a Video Game Hack – Challenge Types*

*Glitch in the System: a Trapped in a Video Game Hack – Challenge Types*

In Glitch in the System, there are 3 levels of challenge.

The first is the low level challenge; a swarm of dire rats, a minor trap, a group of under leveled players. This challenge type represents something small and typically simple to overcome, requiring one or two rolls from party members to overcome the challenge. The challenge is represented by a single token, beat the challenge, receive the token. (Tokens can be exchanged for coin at the end of a score or can be used during the score for a free Push Yourself effect).

The second tier challenge is an “Elite Challenge”. A major complication presents itself, a tougher than usual monster appears, a challenging NPC duels your character. They are represented by a number of tokens equal to the challenge’s tier/2 (rounded up). The rewards are typically much greater for defeating this type of challenge, but the challenge is also more difficult to overcome, requiring teamwork and multiple rolls to complete.

The final tier is a “Boss Level Challenge”. This is the time a boss monster presents itself, or players are engaged in PvP with skilled opponents. This is the most difficult tier of challenge and activates the aggro system that I described in an earlier post. A boss is represented by a number of Boss Tokens equal to their tier. Boss Challenges are made up of a number of clocks equal to the number of Boss Tokens remaining and each clock has a mechanic attached to it (the boss sets the room on fire, minions spawn, the boss’ skin becomes toxic etc.).

Each clock of a boss will activate in a particular order and players have a certain amount of time to complete the challenge clock before it locks down and a new one is activated. When a clock activates, the Boss Challenge activates the mechanic written on the clock; and when it deactivates, the mechanic stops. Once a boss’ clock fills, it flips over, permanently activating the mechanic but also revealing a weakness to exploit. Filling a flipped clock deals catastrophic damage to the boss, weakening it for the remainder of the challenge and awarding the players the Boss Token associated with the clock (much bigger boons than regular tokens). Once all the Tokens have been taken, the boss challenge is completed.

The idea behind these difficulty levels is to make the game feel interesting to the players. No one wants to sit around and fight a group of bandits all day, but an epic battle with a Demon is something everyone can get hyped about and no one wants to be over in 2 to 3 rolls. This makes boss battles more drawn out, descriptive and challenging than simply saying “fill the clock, kill the monster”, while allowing players to breeze through the lesser challenges in classic blades fashion.

*Example Boss Monster*

*Vespa, Queen of Wasps*

*Tier 2*

*Boss Token 1*: Vespa summons a swarm of Armoured Wasps to attack the players and protect herself. Kill them (0/8).

*Reverse*: The Vespa and her wasps shed their armour becoming much faster and more deadly but become vulnerable to fire damage.

*Reward*: You may trade in this boss token at the end of a score for either a Giant Wasp mount each, a single Horn of Wasps that summons a swarm of Wasps that do what you ask, or 2 coin.

*Boons*: You may expend the boss token in the current score for +2d, +2 effect, or 3 mana of any colour added to the combo pool.

*Boss Token 2*: Vespa sprays poison pools on the floor and at the party making it hard for players to make a move. Players take unrestisted 1 harm for every 3 or lower a dice shows. Attack Vespa to make her vulnerable, or avoid her spray (0/8).

*Reverse*: Vespa begins to fill the room with her poison spray, all players take unrested 1 damage per roll made by the party. Vespa becomes vulnerable to the Speed Attribute.

*Reward*: You may trade in a boss token for either a Scroll of Poison Rain, Poison Resistance, or 2 coin at the end of the score.

*Boons*: You may expend the boss token in the current score for +2d, +2 effect, or 3 mana of any colour added to the combo pool.
