I’ve finished the floorplan for my take on the Red Sash Sword Academy, which by the book is ‘a large mansion converted into a training school for the Falling Star style of Iruvian sword play.’

I know maps and floorplans can be a controversial topic amongst BITD fans, but hopefully this is of interest to some of you!

I tried to strike a balance providing a structure to spark imagination but leaving plenty of blank spaces (hence no furnishings). I imagine a lot of red Iruvian drapery and banners, particularly hanging down from the railing around the hole in the floor of the Masters’ Arena and the gallery below right down to the floor of the great hall. It’s easy to imagine a duel between masters involving a lot of verticality and shifts up and down floors (it is called the Falling Star style!).

The image is huge in its original dimensions, so do zoom in and have a look around..! I love dynamic lighting in Roll20 for atmosphere, so that’s how I intend to use this.

I seem to remember John Harper posting somewhere (probably a few years ago now) about his workflow for creating some of the artwork in Blades, but I can’t for the life of me find it anywhere… From memory it involved manipulating multiple images and thresholds in Photoshop.

Can someone throw me a link, or am I just imagining things…?

My players finally picked out a name for their crew, so it seemed appropriate to introduce that name in the fiction in a big way… and since they just got an Inspector on their asses last session, what better way than plastering these up all over Doskvol (and my apartment as a surprise when they walked in)?

Watch out for the Devil’s Gentry, y’all. They like to play with fire.

I made some Roll20 clock assets and thought I’d share, these ones inspired by the Faction Clocks displayed in the faction plates for Scum & Villainy. Right now it has an 8 and 10 clock as well as two color variations on a 6 clock. Enjoy!

I stumbled upon this photo of Pittsburgh in 1955 and immediately thought “Duskvol!” I clicked on the link and it brought me to the work of the renowned photojournalist W. Eugene Smith. There are definitely some Blades-esque pictures, but take some time to sit with these powerful, resonant images:

I kind of accidentally started a Blades in the Dark tumblr to hold inspirational things I come across on that platform. If any of you want to be (responsible) co-curators of it, drop me a line here. Otherwise, enjoy.
