The Porcelain Dolls: Session 38 (October 20 2016)

A newspaper article on the front page reveals that a Lieutenant in the Bluecoats and a member of the City Council were found dead in Nightmarket last night. Gears recognizes the names as two of Ellsworth’s blackmail victims.

Gears gets the idea to approach the remaining victims and attempt to rally them against Ellsworth, but Constance is reluctant to assume that Ellsworth is behind it. Constance suggests that she and Gears sell the blackmail evidence back to the rest of the victims, while Kamali and Shade investigate the murders.

Door to Door Salesmen:

There are nearly a dozen people in Ellsorth’s files, but the following names stand out:

* Ridwaan Jaffer: Associate in the Iruvian Consulate. Blackmailed for taking bribes.

* Ettore Rodia: City Council member. Blackmailed for monkeying with local elections.

* Luther Curtis: Wealthy merchant. Blackmailed for bucking import tariffs.

* Lady Drake: Local Magistrate. Blackmailed for association with local gang members.

Constance and Gears speak to Lady Drake, as she’s the only one they already know. They offer her folder to her for free, but they ask for assistance in contacting the others on the list, for the purposes of letting them sort out amongst themselves how best to deal with Ellsworth. Lady Drake is grateful to be out from under his thumb, and says she will coordinate everything and send them info on times and places.

Law & Order: Doskvol

Shade goes to see Inspector Woll to try and get a copy of the crime scene report. Woll knows the Inspector on the case (Ingrid Frantzen), and gets a copy of the report to give to Shade the next day.

That evening after dinner, Fitz brings McDonough to the Bucket. He’s considerably cleaned up, and quite grateful for his new lease on life. Constance asks about Ellsworth, he tells them about Ellsworth’s ruffian friends that used to hang around the factory. Kamali brings a message from a crow, stating that Col Adams of The Lost wants to speak to Constance about an urgent matter.

Flashback to earlier in the afternoon: Shade hands off the report to Kamali, who brings it to Darmot that evening. They review the report together over some curry. The victims were Lt Stevens of the Watch, and Councilor Bollen. They were found together under a bridge in Nightmarket, each shot once in the head with a pistol at close range. The circumstances are suspicious, because the two men didn’t have any particular reason to be together, and neither of them had any particular reason to be in Nightmarket. Darmot sees a description of several suspicious individuals with distinctive tattoos that were seen in the area, and based on the tattoos he identifies them as members of the Strays, a small gang based on Coalridge. He notes that it’s only a matter of time before Ingrid figures out who they are and rounds them up, but Kamali has a bit of a head start. Kamali brings the info back to the Factory, where she finds a crow waiting on the roof with a message for Constance.

Constance heads to The Cat & Cradle in Charterhall. The Lost want permission from Constance to hunt down a serial killer they’ve tracked to Crow’s Foot. His name is Ulstano, and the bodies of several children were found in his basement. He’s currently hiding out in a tenement building in Crow’s Foot, waiting for a friend of his to bring enough cash to get him onto a ship. Constance agrees to have her people apprehend him and bring him to The Lost, as she’s concerned about the public’s perception of an unknown gang coming into Dolls territory and meting out justice.

Notes:

Things are starting to come together for our second arc. The Dolls are established now, and starting to branch out, and we’ll see their friends and enemies grow accordingly.

So a few friends and I started playing Blades in the Dark a little while ago.

So a few friends and I started playing Blades in the Dark a little while ago. We didn’t have a full description of the canon factions, we only had the names, so some things may be different from the 7.1 descriptions.

The Cult, known as “The Queen’s Hand”, began with its two founders, Cyrene the Whisper and Phaya the Leech. The two of them serve an enigmatic deity known as “The Siren Queen”. The Queen has tasked them to recover some relics to perform a ritual, the exact nature of which She has not disclosed.

The first relic set before them was a complicated acquisition. They knew where and when the artifact would be there, but they didn’t know exactly what it was. They knew it was in possession of the Ink Rakes (who in our campaign took on the role of censoring the media).

So our crew began. They infiltrated the Ink Rakes headquarters through an arcane ritual, allowing them to temporarily pass through solid objects akin to taking on a ghost form. The Whisper was told this would have repercussions down the road, but chose to take the risk. Once inside the HQ, the crew obtained disguises, in order to try to blend in with the Ink Rakes.

The crew explored for a bit, searching for a vault which they believed would hold the artifact. In their journey they found a few old tomes, which the Ink Rakes had not yet been able to censor. Our Leech, who is an ex-Iruvian Scholar, delighted in this, and could not wait to get back to their lair to begin translating them.

The crew’s disguises held up, at least for a while. One guard managed to see through the disguise, though she was quickly dealt with, as the Leech blew some trance powder into her face, while our Whisper subdued her. They left her be once she was no longer a threat.

The Queen’s Hand finally found their way to the basement, where there stood a vault, behind which they were certain their artifact stood. There was only one problem. Well, two, actually, and those were the armed guards standing in front of the vault entrance.

After a long and brutal fight, in which our Whisper was badly injured (Shot, stabbed, and nearly traumatized), the two guards were dead, and the crew was (miraculously) alive. Our Leech then pulled out their surefire way into the vault: a bomb she had built beforehand. They made sure the bodies were near the bomb, to hide as much evidence as possible.

The crew was in the vault, but everyone in the building now knew that something had just happened in the basement due to the sound of the explosion. They had only a few moments before the rest of the guards would be here. They searched and didn’t know what they were looking for, until our Whisper put on her spirit mask. In the vault, there was one item radiating with such intense arcane energies that there was no way it wasn’t the artifact. A paintbrush, of all things, which seemed incredibly mundane to anyone not looking at it with a spirit mask.

Upon grabbing the brush, Cyrene felt filled with awe. Like she had just seen the infiniteness of the universe. Like she had seen just beyond the cusp of our limited knowledge and known all that ever had been, that was, and that would be. Like she was climbing a mountain, and had just reached the summit, and beyond the summit she saw the vast expanse of Everything. This feeling passed as she put the brush in her pocket, and stopped touching it with her bare skin.

The crew tested their disguises one last time, as the guards rushed into the basement. Due to an incredibly lucky crit on Phaya’s part, they succeeded in persuading the Ink Rakes that the explosion had come from inside the vault, and that an artifact must have exploded. While the guards investigated the explosion, our crew managed to quietly slip out the now-unguarded front door.

The crew resolved that, after how badly their fight had gone, they needed to bring more muscle with them. As such they sought to hire new muscle (AKA we’re getting a new player). The crew waits and rests as they lick their wounds, and await the Siren Queen’s next command.

The Legion, after taking care of The River Eels, go back to their lair to be joined with the third member of their group Books the whisper, a severosi old man who has the holy book of Iguanis that only he can read. Pockets and Flick are along with him when they realize that they don’t have a good way to keep their religious operation afloat financially? What does any (un)holy group do to get money for their needs? They attempt to make the finest brandy they can muster. After many rolls and tons of coin spent, they have the exquisite (tier two) brand called “Black Scale Brandy” after the scales of their lord and savior. It is at this mention that we noticed that those in the upper echelon of their church begin to grow scales wherever an injury heals. Ah yes, their lord is pleased.

The main issue is getting their brandy a chance to be reproduced, so they decide to pay Djera Maha, leader of The Hive. Knowing that just arranging a meeting with someone so high up the food chain would be tough, they eventually dig into enough information to arrange a meeting with her, except everything goes badly and the timing couldn’t be more horrible. She turns the tables, threatening to take their new product that was offered and merely copy it and sell it on their own. With the talents of their whisper’s summoned ghost, it slips in a nearby guard as a show of power that the crew can control what they want. Djera realizes that her initial view of them as low level scum wasn’t entirely true and decides to allow use of a distillery, with a tithe going to the Hive as a business deal.

The crew returns to their lair and celebrates, with Books beginning a project to transcribe the word of Iguanis for all the world to see.

Had my first non-Thief crew last night and finally I arrived on the occult/obscure/weird side of Doskvol which was reeeeally cool:

The “9th Eye of Leviathan” is a new cult operating from a hidden lair in Crow’s Foot, just below the bridge crossing over to Charhollow. Half of the lair is under water which gives them a good connection to the water-demon-god who called them to Doskvol. The cult right now is a Tycherois Leech and a Spider from the Dagger Isles and they’re not happy with how Akoros is managing things around here. The third member will join the holy quest next session and I’m curious about his taste of madness.

In the first 15 minutes of creating this crew the goal of the cult was made clear: Tearing down the lightning towers / electrical barriers ASAP to let the demons into town, flooding eveything with the holiest of all elements: water! Hail, oh great Leviathan!

They’re planning to make U’Duasha a seaside town, so they won’t stop with Doskvol and they don’t bother with small plans. So cool! 🙂

Maye I mentioned from time to time that there are powers which want to preserve the status-quo or bring another bright future which may not be consistent with the plans of the cult, but hey, the cult has it’s mission and you don’t say no to your god, am I right?

So, after my first more confentional crews this is my first weird one. It was an awesome night just creating these guys and see the happy faces of my players. I’m more than curious to find out what will happen next!

The group of Smugglers known as The Devil’s Bargain Crew emerge right after the events with The Legion. They’re holed up in a tower on the coast between Crow’s Foot and Charhollow, with a hidden water entrance to store their boat. Nightmare the whisper, Nero the cutter, Silvertongue the Slide, Pilgrim the lurk, and Red eyes the hound, are hired by a muscled man wearing oil stained coveralls to clean up the slaughtered remains of *The River Eels, whose killers are unknown.

Wanting to know a bit about what went on, SIlvertongue calls in his bartender friend Klyra to see if she knows anything about what had happened. After a friendly chat, she concedes that she knows of the gang and that they were in the pockets of a gang higher up on the food chain.

Most of the crew hops onto an old fishing boat used for smuggling and head their way towards the docks. Red eyes scouts the place out and gives a signal to the team via hunting pet that something is afoot. Just outside the deceased gang’s old hideout a small contingent of Red Sashes that are checking out the area. Silvertongue, knowing that their gangs are still on good terms, convince the leader of the small force that his gang was hired to clean up the area before the Bluecoats fully find out what had happened here.

When attempting to remove the bodies, a ghost begins to rise from the beheaded corpse of Horus Dirken, leader of The River Eels and it doesn’t take long before Nightmare jumps into action, trapping his soul in a spirit bottle, thinking she could sell him somewhere. With that taken care of, they quietly take the twelve bodies onto their boat and figure out they could hijack someone’s hagfish farm to dispose of the bodies. During the trip south to Coalridge, Red eyes notices an electroplasmic mist seeping from the cloth covering the pile of bodies and freaks out. Nightmare strains herself to save her crew from abandoning ship, allowing them to fight the ghosts.

Red eyes shows his real aptitude with his electroplasmic ammunition and begins putting down ghosts left and right, with the rest of the crew attempting to fight becoming possessed with spirit charms. Nightmare manages to snag another ghost as another causes Silvertongue, at the wheel, to slam into the dice of the canal and causing nearby pedestrians to notice the clamor. Soon enough, the ghosts are put down with everyone shaken but alive. They reach the hagfish farm, noticing that the exterior is guarded by a lightning wall. Nightmare and Pilgrim try to sneak their way to find the off switch only to find a guard in the nearby building. Pilgrim attempts to take him out quietly, only to find himself wrestling with the man on the floor. They struggle, but the lurk succeeds. With the barrier down, the crew unloads the bodies and hightails it out, making sure to turn the barrier back on.

With the crew back at their hideout, they realize that the person who offered the job was a Lampblack. Soon enough, they are headed to meet with Bazso Baz. The two gangs are already on bad terms, but the leader of the Lampblacks offers a choice: forfeit a portion of the pay and ally and promise to stay out of the war with the Red Sashes, leaving The Devil’s Bargain Crew on even terms with both crews, or take their pay and leave safely and risk being crushed under the Lampblacks’ boots. They choose the latter.

Red Eyes goes out for personal training by hunting and killing a civilian in the dead of night, followed by indulging in a secret vice.

GM Notes

Running five people seems a bit much in terms of trying to focus on individual characters, so it quickly becomes more about the tensions that arise from that man people trying to assert power.

The Cult known as The Legion emerges from the criminal underbelly under the command of their glorious deity Iguanas. While plotting under an abandoned Church of the Ecstasy of the Flesh in Nightmarket, they receive their first vision from the physical incarnation of their Elder Iguana God. Convert….CONVERT it blasts into their minds as it disappears. In its cultists minds they get an image of men in wetsuits carrying what appears to be barrels of demon blood. The cultists know what they must do.

Flick the Slide and Pockets the Cutter set off to find out more about this group of people. The River Eels, a Tier 1 smuggling group, were working on sending their product upstream. The two and their group of Adepts, led by Penguin, attempt to gather information about the gang and their location.

Flick’s old friend Nyryx, a prostitute in The Docks, tells him of some regular clients that come in from time to time. It doesn’t take long for Legion to survey the area and find an occasional man waiting by the docks, only to walk away with a barrel from time to time. After tailing the man to his hideout, they decide that they’ll simply convert or kill the entire hideout.

The plan doesn’t go nearly as well as they expected, after bombing the front door, only to find the room empty, they are surrounded by Eels. Despite having the tables turned on them, The Legion fights back ferociously, losing a couple men and taking out just as many for an even score. The Eels realize that their opponent was tougher than they realized and regroup inside for a better advantage. The Legion comes in for a skirmish at another major disadvantage in tier and scale, only to have Pockets’s Savageness take out enough people to draw a one on one with their leader, Horus Dirken. Despite all of the setbacks, Pockets savagely slices the man’s head off and sticks it on the harpoon he attempted to attack with. Realizing that they have been beaten, the rest of The Eels back off, only to be converted to their dark lord’s Legion via a burning mark on their necks. The Eels’ are effectively wiped out.
