Parts 1 and 2 of tonight’s Daybreakers session.

Parts 1 and 2 of tonight’s Daybreakers session. It was pretty much all downtime in part 1. We broke into a little bit of free-play in part 2. I think I’m having problems pushing the crew through some of this stuff. I don’t want to skimp too much on the fiction, but I also don’t want to spend a crazy amount of time on downtime actions or info gathering. Maybe I just need to be a little more explicit about stuff? I dunno. We’re still fully in the learning curve of the game, I guess.

A Explosão episode 4.

A Explosão episode 4.

A Explosão episode 4.

The stalwart crew at anarcho-feminist newspaper A Explosão are on the hunt for their next big story. The dockers and the local street gang – the Três Cachos – are now actively hostile, and the monarchist and communist papers are gaining ground.

In this session, I tried out a new standardised “score” for breaking a story. It consists of two stages, each with a 6-segment clock. First is the legwork, getting the facts, quotes/attribution and pictures. Then is the write-up: headline, lede, nutshell, kicker, printing.

I also made a sheet of story leads and events, mostly cribbed from the BitD sheets, for the players to choose from as prompts.

First of all, Maria the lurk comes running into the office, an abandoned warehouse, pursued by police and covered in blood. She didn’t stab that policeman but try telling them that. Victor the leech disposes of the knife; Octavia the cutter talks Sergeant Marques round while Maria leads the constables on a wild goose chase. She gives her bloodied clothes to one of the paper’s street-urchin gang to dispose of, which will come back to haunt them.

The crew later parlay the connection with the sergeant into a lookouts claim: they’re now hooked into the cops’ local network of informants. Octavia pulls this off in her inimitably violent way by roughing up Marques, but seems to have fallen for him too and the pair hit the town in a big way that night. She comes to work the next day with a raging hangover.

Over the following days, the crew successfully breaks the story of medical neglect at a city orphanage operated by American missionaries. Maria gets herself into the building undercover as an orphan, while Victor helps to get the photos.

Next they decide to confront the Três Cachos head-on. Maria breaks into the home of the gang’s leader, Pica-Pau, and steals his prized navalha (straight razor).

“What first tips you off that Pica-Pau isn’t alone here?” “He’s blindfolded and his hands are tied to the bed frame.”

The next day, the paper runs a front-page challenge, inviting Pica-Pau to a fight on the beach, with his navalha as the prize. He accepts, naturally.

The day of the fight is a big event attracting hundreds of onloookers: Pica-Pau shows up in his white suit with a malacca cane for a weapon. Octavia wears her mother’s wedding dress (“I might not get another chance.”) and brings a cricket bat.

Thanks to some chemical bat-preparations by Victor, her fighting abilities and pushing herself, Octavia wins the day and embarrasses Pica-Pau. With a roll of 2, 2, 3, 6, it was a close-run thing, and I’d made clear that Pica-Pau would do his best to kill Octavia (4 harm).

The Três Cachos splinter, dropping a tier but going to war with the newspaper crew. The incident gets a glowing review in their own paper. The rest of the popular press goes with MONSTROUS REGIMENT OF WOMEN COMMITS VIOLENT OUTRAGE.

Next session (my players, look away now): war against the remnants of the Três Cachos; the dockers arrange for an eviction order at the warehouse; whatever other trouble the crew create.

And my final crew of Scoundrels enters the darkened streets of Duskwall!

This crew (the Shades) and the other two crews I have in Blades games (the Black Opals and the Radiant Wardens) are all operating in the same version of Duskwall, with a tentatively planned crossover to take place in early June. 🙂

Crew “The Third” session part 2 “Masquerade in the Silkshore”

Umbzuzu – Severosi Whisper

Isabela – Tycherosi Lurk

Thornton – Dagger Isles Cutter

Just finished our second blades session, a couple of things to iron out after this session and improve on. It was a social score and I felt it a little harder to run than the last Stealth session.

So the party finished up last time after making off with Bazso’s war treasury and burning the place to the ground for Mylera. Mylera was impressed and had a number of jobs for them if they so chose, she divulged that she planned to coordinate multiple strikes on Lampblack territory and that if the crew hit one of his operations they could keep the turf for their own ends.

She disclosed the location of a brothel owned by a Madame La’Fort in the docks, with a lampblack drug lockup in the basement. After gathering information and from what our brothel connoisseur knew to be true, they came up with a plan to convince the Madame to turn against the lampblacks and have her run the brothel under the crews protection. Plus giving the crew full use of the premise as their turf. They found her to be attending a masquerade style party for the lampblacks and working girls, in imitation of the much classier noble events. The party was being held in slightly run down Silkshore manor property on a canal.

They rolled a good engagement, yet almost faltered at the door, managing to just about bluff their way in. After a while searching and an argument with a prostitute starting a clock “discovered at the masquerade” (this bit of the game I should have acted to speed up earlier), they discovered the madam to be looking after players at a card table in a large study, converted into gambling room. They paid the fee to enter the gaming room room, and then on a good fortune roll they recognized Madame La’Fort and one of the players at the table as Brick, a lieutenant of Baz . Umbzuzu joined the cards table, while Isabel and Thorn were near the bar area. Umbzuzu was able to get her to fetch something from the bar, where Thorn made a desperate sway roll attempting to chat her up and get her to come somewhere secluded for a while. He succeeded and the two of them made their way to some private rooms upstairs, where he dropped his guise and just about made her listen to him before she stormed out. He knew of the Lampblacks bad treatment of the girls and after listening to his plan, a good fortune roll meant she accepted his deal on the condition that they took care of Brick. The girls would make the takeover if he was out of the way. The crew had taken a fair bit of stress while getting the results they needed to avoid conflict and decided rather than take him out there, they would leave and do that as another score. So the whole score turned out to be a set up.

They will encounter a few issues next time, as Bricks suspicion was aroused, they weren’t discovered at the party but they were noticed, although luckily for them it was a masquerade. There’s still time for things to go wrong, as Mylera would have carried out her strikes during this score, yet they haven’t completed their goal.

My only thought is that the game slowed when they tried to avoid danger too much and I felt I needed to press it on them a bit more, but not wanting to detract from their successes either. I think I need to complicate their lives a bit more on 4/5 rolls. They were only a couple of ticks from their whole cover being blown, so there was still a lot of room for it to go wrong. Also one player wants to kill stuff and another wants to avoid killing due to consequences, how can this clash be resolved? Second session and a bit of ironing out to do my end but I can mostly see where I need to work on. I think they also need to try and jump into the action a bit more. Shall see next session 🙂
