Expertise is no longer a thing, so characters can now advance to level 3 in any action without any crew upgrade — right? They just need the crew upgrade Mastery (a 2pt upgrade) to advance to level 4.

The Fine Lighting Hook is listed as on the item descriptions (page 29) as a Whisper Item but it’s not on the Whisper’s character sheet. Should the Whisper have access to this or not?

Made some quick Consequences Cards to make it easy for the GM to visually lay out what the repercussions are. I like to tell my players before they even roll what the possible repercussions are for a failed roll as then they know the stakes and can judge if they want to take a devil’s bargain or assistance. I made these cards to make it easy just show them what is at stake.

Question about On Point, Group Action rolls:

Question about On Point, Group Action rolls:

Let’s say we have three thieves sneaking into a manor. Player A is On Point and decides to Lead a Group Action to sneak in using Prowl. Player A has a Prowl 2 as does Player B but Player C has no Prowl score. Can Player C to get +1d by using a Devil’s Bargain or even get assistance from Player B for +1d?

I mean in most cases there would be no reason to do this but if Player A was low on stress points it could make sense. And I assume it’s totally allowable in the rules to assist Player C’s roll but I just wanted to put the question out there just in case. I’m running the game this Sunday for the first time and I’m trying to have a solid grasp of the mechanics before then.

And a second related question: let’s say Player A has a fine shadow cloak. Does this still give a +1 effect to the group roll even though the others in the group don’t have fine cloaks? And how about what if Player B has a fine shadow cloak but Player A who is on point doesn’t?

On the advice of someone I forget I watched the movie John Wick last night. Totally solid action flick and obviously directed by stunt people and seemingly influenced by stealth action video games.

I mention it here even though it’s modern day, as it has some good very BitD like elements with the stealth action and the various underworld people and factions bumping up against each other. Watching the flick, I could easily see in my head the progress clocks and devil’s bargains at play.

Also the scene with the cleaners taking the bodies away is great and made me think whomever has the job of being cleaner in Duskwall has to make a pretty penny.

Yay! I finally organized some friends for a multi-session game of Blades in the Dark — scheduling as adults is hard.

So for those of you who have run it, do you have a recommended way of getting everyone going? Obviously I could just do it as written: explain the situation, make characters, make crew. However, part of me is feeling that it would be better to just jump into the action and do crew creation later, like after the first score or during a slow point in the first score.

Anyone run it this way before with crew creation later? Or did you run it as written and have advice to make it smoother so we can jump into the action faster.

I was trying to come up with a good way of porting the Flashback style gameplay to Apocalypse World but haven’t hit upon the best approach. Ideally the best approach wouldn’t add much in the way of additional rules on top of big standard AE. I was thinking of possibly trading a Flashback for a MC move. Or instead making a special Flashback Sharp move to be prepared.

Anyone got any good ideas?

Wanted to share my Ghost Lines character background cards that I created for use when I ran one shot games of Ghost Lines (Dark variant). I realized they could also be really useful for creating Rail Jack (aka Line Bull) NPCs in Blade in the Dark. Just divide the types of cards into piles and randomly draw one from each. The rules listed are going to be different from BitD but the cards are mostly descriptive so they should work fine. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_x5XNahtqzvUEhKc2FzYnNkMVE/edit?usp=sharing
