One of my players has expressed interest in being the “forger” of this crew of smugglers, making, doctoring, and falsifying records to add legitimacy to their contraband.  The crew has the “quality documents” upgrade; but I think the player wants to be a little more involved (i.e. make some rolls either during down time or in flashbacks) in the processes of actually making the documents.  I know sitting for hours in a room with a stack of papers and ink isn’t exactly a daring action; but I want to engage an aspect my player is excited about.  Any suggestions?

  1. It’s daring if you’re forging a letter of appointment by the Lord Commissioner of the Bluecoats for a deception heist or orders from the Emperor to take command of the Paragon.

The daring bit is the downside/consequences of things not going exactly right.

  2. Now, I’ve got to make sure my players read this – it’d awesome if the cult would start forging holy scriptures of their forgotten god to prove some kind of hierarchy or ancient debt…

  3. The acquisition of the correct materials  (or in some cases any materials), especially the correct paper stock, and ink.   Obtaining examples of the original documentation so they know what they have to forge.  The actual forging can be the easy and relaxing part of the affair in comparison.

  4. Consequences don’t have to be immediate, as Donogh says. The Position will depend on how severe the consequences of a poor forgery are. You roll then and there for whether the forgery will be recognised rather than when the person examines the document. It will require a little more bookkeeping, but will prevent the need for a fortune/resistance roll during play. It seems like Study is the most appropriate Action, but none jump out.

  5. Thanks all, these ideas are great, esp. Andrew Shields I never would have found that past post, lots of other good stuff there.

I had considered “Study” and “Finesse” as possible rolls for the finished docs, but not “Tinker”  All seem like good options depending on the fiction.

I also really like the ideas for what is necessary to get the originals to copy/doctor. My brain is ticking.

  6. Kelsa Delphi Hey, Kelsa! I was also pondering the other day which action roll it would be to write an article, or a poem, or anything else for that matter. And yeah, from my own experience, writing a poem, as with all writing you intend to publish, requires a lot of Tinkering in the editing and making things rhyme etc.

  7. Adam Sexton I know my writer/reporter/slide is often trying to SWAY public opinions with his articles (not 100% related; but I know that you know what I mean)

  8. I like to wait and roll for the forgery at the moment when they try to pass off the forged papers. “You did your best work. You hand the letter to Commander Bowmore and he scrutinizes the seal for a moment. Make a risky roll!”
