  1. Only a small number of 6 sided dice.  Say, 4 or 5 per player.  Paper, pencils, whatever you use to organize it all.  The $10 pledge level is enough to start with (the Quick Start is in it) but I’d suggest going for at least the $20 level.  Think of it as getting all the DLC up front for a reduced price instead of having to buy it all separately for a lot more money later.  Want art and pretty maps or want a hard cover book?  There are higher levels for that.

I think you chose a good game.  It’s made to “fail gracefully” or however exactly it’s worded.  That means that even if you don’t remember every little thing or don’t do it perfect, it will still work pretty well.  Also, unlike other games, the Quick Start includes a beautiful page titled GM Best Practices.  It’s really good.  It’ll help a lot.  This game also takes a lot of the work in making a plot away from you.  You don’t have to do tons of prep before a game or worry that the players don’t do things how you planned.  It’s made to be great for improving with little preparation.  This same thing is also often called GM support, and will make your job much easier.  I feel much more comfortable with the prospect of running a game of Blades than running anything else myself as well (especially say, GURPS?…)  🙂

  2. Check the Quick Start. It says Materials needed:

    – at least 7 six-sided dice

    – printed character, crew and reference sheets

    – printed maps of Duskwall etc.

    – pencils and erasers

    – index cards and marker.

For your pledge, that depends. I play roleplaying games three or four nights a week, and I’ve played a few of John’s previous games before, so I know I’ll get lots of value from pledging for a book.

  3. Good players are the most valuable assets for a good game. Cultivating a good group that challenges each other is the most important thing to me.

  4. I sooooo wish my first ever RPG was Blades! You are gonna have a blast! And let us know how the Actual Play goes?

I’d recommend some inspirational art or music (or both) to have lying about. Read some fiction in the genre,

Oh and some portrait pics for NPCs are always good!

  5. Nathan Roberts that portrait stack is awesome. I don’t know how I haven’t seen it before.

Andrew Ramseyer What others have said and eager, open imaginations to find out what happens to this crew of ambitious scoundrels. I’m so excited for your and your friends to dive in with this game!

I personally enjoy music behind games when I’m GMing but some players find it distracting. Check the Art and Music sections of this community for great playlists, Pinterest boards with tons of thematic art, and I recommend http://tabletopaudio.com/ for less distracting background soundscapes. They have various 10-minute repeating tracks of ambient city/harbor noises, (Victorian city noises, a new age of steam track, and plenty of paranormal or ominous stuff if you want that).

  6. Hi Andrew! It sounds like you got the info you need. Feel free to ask questions in the community here when you have them. Everyone is happy to help out.

  7. Yes he is! The dropbox link is still valid:  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36851535/Grimace1.0.zip

But I should definitely put it in my own google drive.

I’m always glad to hear/read that somewhere, players use those portraits for their own fiction ^^

    The baby as grown up since the first release but I never updated the file^^;

Mainly for copyrigh reasons. (Some portraits comes from flickr galleries)

    (Sorry for the shameless self-promotion 😉 )

  8. Thanks Guys! All credit to you Volsung J.O. , I had lost the Dropbox link! Thanks so much for making such a wonderful resource available. I have used it all my games (with humans) from AW to Poison’d to now Blades in the Dark.
