Any suggestions of good horror movies that could provide inspiration for portraying ghosts in BitD? Especially those running wild in the Deathlands/the Lost District?

  1. The movie may be not great, but what about Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within? Large creatures in the Deathlands that kill you if they move through you. Various colours and shapes.

  2. Crimson Peak is a very obvious and very good choice but I’m going to suggest a few bad movies with the good because that’s what I love. Just a warning, this list has a lot of jump scares. Ones with * I haven’t seen yet.

Thirteen Ghosts/Thir13een Ghosts (2001): This movie is so unbelievably awful and tropey in the best way. But more than that, there’s definitely some concepts and visuals that have always stuck with me. The ghosts mostly reflect the traumas of their deaths then exaggerate it. Looking at one tells you the broad strokes of their stories.

V/H/S & V/H/S 2 (2012 & 2013): I honestly don’t remember much of this one but skimming over the synopsis for both says it may give you some inspiration for how ghosts came to be.

White: Melody of Death (2011): This one is, you know, kinda wildly out of place in this list but it could really help with how ghosts choose to make themselves known.

The Neon Demon (2016): This actually isn’t a bad movie so much as an overly artsy indie flick that can be a little too caught up in its own head. A lot of this depends on how you choose to watch it but it could inspire how a haunting begins.

Gothika (2003): Honestly, Thirteen Ghosts does its ghosts similarly and better. But if you like Halle Berry, go for it.

    * The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014): The conceit is that a woman with Alzheimer’s is also dealing with possession. I don’t know how the movie handles that but maybe there’s something good in there.

    * The Invitation (2015): I’ll watch this because I like the idea behind it, a dinner party gone very wrong. Maybe a possessed noble could be behind something like it?

I know I’m missing ones I would put on a list but I can’t think of more at the moment.

  3. Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions! So far the Ghost Circus crew have managed to slip into the Lost District and back without actually encountering any of its hungry denizens (though they were 1/8 away from it), but I am definitely looking forward for hours of creepy entertainment.

  4. Dmitry Gerasimov weird as it might seem but I actually think the Jim Carry CGI animated version has some great ghosts in it. Very scary and interesting versions in that.
