I Am The White

When you would take fatal Harm, you may instead step into the ghost field and take 1 Trauma instead. You return from the ghost field a few days later.

This seems really cool to me, but then I realized you can always roll to resist and take stress to avoid Level 4 Harm, and then take a Trauma, right? This is an ability everybody essentially has.

  1. This is actually about the same idea as an ability I played with for a while. It’s a cool concept, but you’re right. It’s not that valuable when you can resist the harm.

(I actually play with Uncertain Resistance, where the harm might not be resisted, but even then I think it’s too niche to be an attractive ability.)

  2. You could shift it so that if you managed a desperate roll to attune to the ghost field, then you could do that INSTEAD of taking a point of Trauma. Then it is very powerful in a very narrow circumstance; a fair trade, I think. And if the fiction doesn’t let you dodge into the Ghost Field to avoid that last hit, then it doesn’t help anyway.

I think that tweak makes it very worthwhile. You still seem trauma’d out, and still disappear for a few days, but you don’t take Trauma.

  3. Better still, make it a special ability you buy once, and then it just works; whenever you’d take Trauma, you’re drawn into the Ghost Field (unless something prevents it.) But that use of the ability consumes it, and you’ll have to buy it again. It works like macro-armor. Check off the armor box to protect from 1 trauma. But that’s so powerful you have to buy it again every time it is used.

  4. I Am The White:

When you would take Level 4 harm you may instead decrease it to level 3 harm and immediately manifest yourself as a ghost. Make a desperate attune roll to determine how far away you manifest yourself. If you are able to return to your body within 48 hours you may return to your normal play book, otherwise your body dies and you switch to the ghost playbook.

6,6: Manifest on top of your body

6: Manifest on the same block as your body

4-5: Manifest in the same district as your body

    1-3: Manifest somewhere within Duskwall

1,1: Manifest outside of Duskwall’s lighting barrier

Alternatively if you don’t want to deal with crit failures shift everything up 1 degree (So Manifest outside becomes the failure condition) Alternatively increase the time to return to a week.

Also a fantastic way to get a PC in Scurlock’s bathtub
