I’m interested in weekday and weekend day games ending by 3:30pm EST at the latest. I can also accommodate evening games from Monday to Thursday as long as I have enough notice. Google Hangouts, Roll20, and Discord are all fine.

  1. I’m interested but have a tight schedule – Wednesdays I’m open for any time, though. Otherwise, it’s really only Friday or Saturday afternoons (EST). Also, I don’t have a ton of experience with any PBtA games … meaning I’ve played one session before. I loved it and really want more.

  2. Loni Walden Blades actually isn’t PBtA, just fyi, but I’m so glad to hear your interest! If we can find just one or two more we have a game!

  3. Jan Petrykowski I realize that, but it is related, so I kinda link them together in a pile of “nifty games I haven’t played much.” 😀 I have one session of BitD under my belt and that’s it. (I could’ve made that clearer in my original response, sorry!)

  4. Hey! I’d be down for a game. I’ve played a few in the past, and I’m a little familiar with Discord and Roll20. My schedule is pretty open at the moment since I’m between jobs, but evenings, outside of Friday, would be better, or during the day on weekends. I’m on PST, just to really confuse things 😛

  5. Ok, so it looks like we’re 4 players; that’s enough to get going. Although I haven’t played I’ve watched probably 40 hours of gameplay so I think I’m relatively comfortable GMing unless someone else wants to step up. It seems like Wednesday at 6PM EST is feasible – what do folks think?

  6. Jan Petrykowski Weds, 6pm EST works for me! Where are we meeting? Discord, Roll20, Skype, other thing that my brain isn’t processing yet because it’s too early here? My preference is Discord/Roll20 combo if that helps.

  7. Oh, haha. I thought we were planning for tomorrow. Cool. Well I can make that. Would you like to GM? I’m down to do it if you’d like to get your feet wet playing the game first.

  8. I am down to GM but maybe I’ll play as a player first. If we end up liking our game enough for a season 2 then I’d be down to GM it.

  9. Ok, so I got next Wednesday off so we can play then if folks are ready. Unfortunately, the following Wednesday is a no-go, but I think after that Wednesday’s should be fine, in general.

  10. I’m down with that, but doesn’t Roll20 have built in video and voice chat already? I haven’t used Discord before – is there some advantage?

  11. Michael Elliott Yeah, I’m used to the Roll20 video and voice but we can decide on Wednesday since switching to Discord would be trivial, I imagine.

  12. I’m used to roll20 for play – but discord for voice. I’m not sure why many groups do it that way, other than Roll20’s voice protocol isn’t as consistent as Discord for some.

  13. Thanks for a great 1st sesh all! I’d say it was a great success, loved meeting you and your characters 😉

I’d say if we wanna try discord again next sesh, the reason it was echoing was that I was also broadcasting from roll20, so should be fine going forward.

  14. I had a blast (even without the train blowing up)! I’m looking forward to next game 🙂

I’m fine sticking with Hangouts or going back to Discord. Whichever is easiest for y’all.

  15. I had a blast too! Thanks again, Michael. Really looking forward to seeing our characters develop around the story and each other. As for our medium, I’m down to do Hangouts again but I’m also down to try discord again.

  16. I’ve talked to Michael, but wanted to let everyone else know: I will be leaving the game. I had a blast and it’s a nifty group we created, but some health issues have popped up, leaving me both fatigued and literally unable to talk. Thank you for the fun time, though!

  17. Loni Walden aw that’s too bad but I totally understand, no worries at all. I REALLY enjoyed meeting and building the fiction with you. Maybe Clemency will reappear someday, as scoundrels often do 😉 Best wishes, hope you feel better soon!

To the others — I am 100% on board with continuing, we could try to find another or go on with just the two PCs. What are your thoughts? I just want to play so I’m open.

  18. Sad to see you go, Loni Walden I didn’t even have time to learn how to say your name right! But seriously, I hope you feel better. Lookin’ forward to playing with ya again!

I’m in if you are Chet Farley, although I’d love to find another player – should we post a new thread?

  19. Just a heads up, I’m slowly moving over to another Google+ Account so you may start seeing replies from another person named Jan. Don’t worry, there isn’t 2 of us!

  20. Now, should we start again or just continue from where we left off? Personally I like the idea of continuing and letting this ghost entanglement setting the stage for 2 new players.

  21. Nice! I agree we should stick with our shadows crew. We’ve done the legwork creating a really cool background, while it’s still early enough for the new folks to help flesh it out.

  22. Mike Espinoza hi Mike! Nice to have you. I’ll fill you in about the details of our campaign thusfar when I find the time – hopefully, by tomorrow evening. Suffice it to say for now that we’re playing Shadows and we’ve just started. We’ve only played one session, in fact.

  23. What follows in a succinct summary of our one game of Blades. I want to give you guys enough info so that you can flush out your characters before then. I’d love to give you a bit more of Phin’s (Chet’s character) background, but I don’t think I’m remembering it well so I’ll leave it to Chet.

Essentially, we’ve elected to play Shadows. We have an ambitious reputation, a secure (1 pt. in secure) and hidden lair (forgotten section of Charterhall library walled off from the rest of it; it’s only accessible through the sewer system below), as well as the crew upgrade of underground maps & passkeys. Our hunting grounds is Brightstone, which fits in with our “ambitious” rep.

My character’s name is Milos, alias “The Pen”. He’s an older gentleman, wiry, hunched, bespectacled, and speaks with a proud old Akorosian accent (Russian). He’s a spider, and considers himself the brains of the operation. Essentially, he’s a ex-academic writer fomenting political unrest through his philosophical critiques of art in Duskwall in which he links the state of art to the state of decadence and corruption of the culture. He has a mind for academics but his true talent is as a communicator. He lacks grossly in his physical abilities, something which I’m sure will lead him into trouble in the near future. He views his fellow group-members as pure souls in accordance with the natural harmony of nature, uncorrupted by the academic and political “sciences” which are really a vile molestation of nature’s course. He sees himself as an agent of history through which nature’s will will guide society back into its former harmoniousness.

He met Clemency (Loni’s character. She will no longer be playing with us.) in Charterhall University after he switched from studying jurisprudence to philosophy and history, during which time he was involved in organizing student protests over the corruption and misgovernment of the school and Duskwall in general. This led, of course, to his expulsion from school which led to his current occupation as an art critic.

Since Phin (Clemency’s gambling friend) and Clemency both agree that the institutions of Duskwall are corrupt we’ve begun to work for them in an effort to gain their trust so that we can bring their organizations down from the inside. Their gambling problems might also have something to do with their motivation to earn some quick coin. Regardless, to that aforementioned end, we have acquired a contact within the Ministry of Preservation named Adelaide. We gained her confidence by doing some work for her.

Not long ago, we stole some papers from the Rail Jacks in order to provide evidence for the Ministry of a smuggling operation to which they were turning a blind eye – a blind eye that was paid for. The documents revealed during the course of the prosecution implicated us as the group responsible for the Rail Jacks losing face with the smuggling ring, something their organization took a reputation hit for, and something for which we’ve earned their ire for. In lieu of payment from Adelaide, we accepted some old dusty files from which we extracted our underground maps and passkeys.

Our last session began in Adelaide’s office in the Ministry. Her ex-husband would be putting on a gala event in the next few days in Westcrown during which he would reveal some art he acquired in the divorce – art, which Adelaide would pay the crew to intercept en route to his abode.

Cut to Gaddoc Rail Station in the south-east of Duskwall. It’s night and Rail Jacks scurry about a train carts moving through the border station of Duskwall, one by one, as each cart is processed. Military personnel are also present as several of the train carts are carrying ammunitions.

Three slightly-out-of-place Rail Jacks quietly enter a cart and find a cache of art exactly where they’d been informed it would be. All is going smoothly until a passer-by notices the crew and begins to chat with one of them about Rail Jack matters with which he has little-to-no acquaintance with. Some quick thinking, combined with a well-placed smoke bomb in the ammunitions cart allows them to escape Rail Jack scrutiny and down to track level. Just then, as if on cue, the sky darkens as a rare celestial event occurs enshrouding the party in a veil of shadow and allowing their escape through some subterranean tunnels and into a raft awaiting them in a canal.

At some point we also decided the Sparkwrights didn’t like us (why, I can’t remember) and that we were friends with the Gray Cloaks, which I imagine is based on our mutual disdain of the corruption in government, although I can’t quite recall so I’m not sure. After our operation our entanglement involved a ghost, which I imagine was related to that strange celestial event and what will be Clemency’s death/disappearance, right, Michael?

Take everything I’ve written here with a grain of salt because I’m trying to recall all of this from the distance of almost 2 weeks.

I hope that helps! Feel free to add to or alter what I’ve written Michael and Chet.

  24. Mike Espinoza I think the main take-away is that we’re playing sneaky burglar types that are befriending the institutions of Duskwall in order to overthrow them. Our hidden base is in a library and our ambitions are far above us.

I also forgot to mention that Chet is playing a Lurk.

Don’t worry too much about anything else, just build your character around that.

If you’re having issues with character creation, no sweat, we’ll just help you on Wednesday.

  25. Jan Petrykowski OK, question, are you playing on Roll20 or via Hangouts? Do I make my character on paper/pdf? (and regarding the extra player, well I think is up to you all, I’m the new here)

  26. Mike Espinoza we’re trying for Discord and Roll20 but we had some technical difficulties with Discord last time, so we’ll see. I have my character on both a paper AND a digital sheet on Roll20. It’s easy enough to transfer to digital as characters are pretty simple in Blades, so start with paper.

  27. Jan Petrykowski Thanks for that excellent summary! And for taking the initiative in finding us some more players. I think 2 more would fit just fine, a crew of 5 might be a bit much, especially for inexperienced players.

  28. Welcome Mike Espinoza and Kyle Hodnett glad to have you on board! While I’ve played a few games of Blades in the Dark we’re all pretty new here so don’t feel too bad about inexperienced. They’re be lots of room for questions and getting situated.

We’re running the game through Roll20, using the character sheets that are provided there. Here’s a link to our game, once you’ve joined I’ll assign you character sheets that you can fill out, or I think you can start one yourself if you’re savvy.

app.roll20.net – Roll20: Online virtual tabletop for pen and paper RPGs and board games

We’re also using Discord to communicate, you’ll need at least a microphone to talk to us, don’t worry too much about a webcam. Here’s an invite to the discord server:

Think of the kind of characters you’d like to play and how they would fit in to a group of Shadows (currently made up of a Slide and a Lurk) stealing things from rich bureaucrats. Feel free to make them before hand if you’d like and then we can start next session introducing your new characters and seeing what’s happened in Duskwall since last we played.

    Looking forward to it!

  29. Hey all, excited to meet the new players. Sorry I haven’t posted but it’s been a busy couple weeks. Wondering, with the new beginnings if it’d be ok for me to tweak my stats and persona a bit? I’ve been thinking I want to bridge the gap between Lurk and Slide, with more points in sway. BTW, I think Milos is a Spider, no?

Pumped for tonight. Here’s a bit of a rough backstory:

Phin Kardera was an orphan from Duskwall, sold to a member of a failing aristocratic house who had gone into the underworld to create a network of child-pickpockets and sneak thieves. This was close to 15 years ago, who knows what has happened to the Thiefmaker Guile Kaldera. Phin as such has struck out on his own, stealing the noble house name of his former master, tho meeting him you’d know he was anything but. A compulsive gambler and seeker-of-trouble, there isn’t a situation Phin finds himself that doesn’t put him in over his head. He’s got a plan though. He’s no fool, and he’s willing to crawl through the muck of the corruption and gangs of Duskwall to prove the noble houses aren’t so different. And if he makes a coin or two along the way, even better.

  30. Kyle Hodnett Mike Espinoza FYI dudes when you login to Roll20 the first time you should go to Settings in the right toolbar and turn off Broadcast Video and Voice since we’ll be using Discord, that was my issue last time.

  31. Chet Farley very cool! Into the fallen aristocratic house angle.

In case you were taking sway because you wanted to fill gaps, you should know that command, sway, and consort are all strengths of mine, although sway is the weakest of the three.

    Psyched for tonight!

  32. Jan Petrykowski thanks! I loved the rob from the rich angle and wanted more synergy to crew.

Adding sway is more because after last sesh I foresee all of us being lying, sneaking, disguise-wearing scoundrels.
