What makes the Immortal Emperor well… immortal?
I realize it’s left up for interpretation at least until the Kickstarter adventure releases but what have been some folks ideas for their gsmes?
I’m fond of the idea of a Lord Vampire, secretly changing the world that has fallen in to his own vision…
Or a giant, perhaps the last giant whom rules and seeks a world reborn…
Or the sorceror of legend, the one who caused the cataclysmic fallout of the world…
What are your ideas? GMs? Developers?
I personally believe that his immortality is somehow tied to the Cataclysm.
Perhaps the immortal emperor is not even of our world…
Perhaps the Immortal Emperor is actually a secret society rather than an individual. Whenever the Emperor dies, another takes his place, feigning resurrection and perpetuity and propagating the myth that the Empire and its ruler are unassailable.
When Kotar bound himself to the Gates of Death then tore himself to pieces, he broke them, and attracted the attention of the Powers. The mists swirled around him, and created a realm that contained the damage he wrought to the wall between life and death. He yearns to retrieve his Eye, his Hand, and his Heart, but he suffers deathless without them, locked in a place where closure is impossible.
Yeah, why NOT make him a Lord of the Mists all Ravenloft style? =)
There was a really embarrassing alchemical accident involved, before the Cataclysm. He became Emperor because he was immortal, not the other way around. And worst of all, he’s bored…all that power and wealth seemed like such a neat thing nine hundred years ago. Now? Not so much.
And a bored Emperor who cannot die is a hazard to health and welfare.
Emperor Keith cut a deal with the leviathans: they can swim eternal in the Void Sea as long as the Emperor lives. If anything happens to him, the sun will come back and the demons will be banished once again beyond the broken moons.
Death Herself, without any gates to guard and an empty domain, has made this realm her new empire.
I’m of the mind he’s a vampire – helps to explain Scurlock’s hatred of him. Vamps can’t STAND one another.
Rumors say the ancient well of U’duasha holds the answer. Do you dare undertake a score to find out?
Mark Cleveland Massengale “Are you off your chump, guv? I likes my viscera right where it is, thanks…an’ divin’ into a great pit of ectoplasmic death is no way to keep it like that!” (grumble) “Be safer ta snaffle a Dimmer sister…”
I might also like him to be like this fellow…
Using plasm and combinations of magic and technology of this new era to subsist eternally, believing genuinely in the advancement of mankind despite the cataclysm, but playing such a bigger picture game (or so devoted to keeping control) that the suffering of many outweighs the survival of all.

It’s a title. He’s always masked, like his wardens, so who would know? Perhaps it is a true monarchy, perhaps a ruling council all act as Emperor.
Stuart Hall “Hey, Frank! Your turn to play Emperor!”
(whining) “But I played him last week…”
“Thing about Thursdays, Frank, is that they’re sort of an every week kind of thing! Now get the mask on. It isn’t my fault the Ways and Means Committee always meets on Thursday.”
The basic plot to my game is that its about 850 years after the plot of Dark Souls with some twists. The Immortal emperor is the Chosen Undead who became the Dark Lord. He’s been suppressing information about the past to prevent any attempts to usurp him or re-link the fire. There is some stuff about soul degradation that allows for the changes to hollowing and the lack of sorceries (for now).
It all started thanks to some of the forgotten god names. The burnt king, The father of the abyss, The forsaken legion, the keeper of the flame. The Crew is playing a cult to The Unbroken Sun, so you know…

Really, the imortal emporer cant renew the spells that protected the cities because he died some 800 years ago. A skeleton sits on the shining throne, and an army of beurocrats rules unfettered by the whims of some whily sorcerrer
I supposed that the immortal emperor is actually a vampire.
In my hipotesys, He is also a great sorcerer (i dont remember if he is a sorcerer by canon..), some kind of dark lord. He menaged to summon a spirit or a demon that possessed him(voluntarily or accidentally), and thus he became a vampire/ an immortal being. He (or the creature that possesses him) caused the Cataclysm to open the gate of Death and become even more powerful, freeing many of his kind (maybe he is some kind of demon lord, maybe he’s the devil, or maybe just a really powerful ghost. The latter opens up many way to expand the story of this charecter as “why he is so powerful? how he died? What he was in life?”). Another possibility is that we became immortal after the cataclysm (he caused the cataclysm accidentally during one of his rituals/experiment/whatever), because after the cataclysm the most powerful being possessed him and made him immortal. In my “version” that’s why everything is so f**ked up. Come on! Think about the spirit wardens! They are not just killing ghosts. They have the proof that there is afterlife, They are actually destroying the spirits of those who die (I instantly paragoned the spirit wardens and ghost to hitler and jews!). They are practically destroying the essence of life in those furnaces.
Also the fact that is all based upon leviathan blood makes things a little sinister to me.
That’s all I came up with, and honestly I was thinking to make a bigger campaign about this plot for my players.
ps: I read the book only once for now, so maybe i’m missing some important point. If i’m right i think i remember that the book talks about “soul” somewhere.
Ps2: Thanks for the Index!!! Soul is actually a living body with his own soul, so all my theory is plausible, if you like this kind of rambling.
