So I plan to run Blades as a one-shot for RPG Day this Saturday. I’ve seen the “Starting as a Gang” doc in the “About Community” tab, and I’ve played the game plenty of times with my friends. However instead of using time at the table to sparse the rules to new players, they’ll have the rules reference sheets in front of them, what are some things I should point out or say that’ll get them to play the game as intended?

“Remember lads, you’re all masters of time and space. You don’t plan ahead of time, you plan after its bitten you in the ass”
I’ve noticed that shaking off the whole “Plan ahead of time” Mentality held by most RPG gamers is the hardest part. Most every system tries to drill “Plan and be prepared” into you and its mostly unnecessary in blades. A quick jaunt to check “Looks like they have hired Serverosi mercs for protection and they watch the place 24/7, but there is a party on Wednesday” and your typically ready to go.
Players’ Best Practices on page 182 is everything the players need to know.
You could start them off hanging around one of the Crows’ points of concentration and have an attack hit; they describe what they’re doing around the room and suddenly there are foes and incoming harm and they’ve got to resist, and use flashbacks to equip themselves, and win free. Once they’re clear, they know the local underboss is in trouble and mount a rescue without a lot of time to plan. That would be fun.
